So I recently bought a vw polo from Volkswagen in Belville. After much hassle I finally got the vehicle inspection report as the vehicles brakes shudder a lot when breaking down hill. They approved the car with 10mm of disk thickness. Is this thin or thick? I have a feeling it is quite thin. Wondering what the legal minimum is?

Brake shudder is due to warped discs or issues with loose/worn suspension bits.. as an example, I had brake shudder due to a bad lower control arm..

There probably a minimum disc thickness in terms of safety standards, but each manufacturer will have a tolerance for the minimum disc thickness allowed and this is what you need to check on.. 10mm is about the thickness of your pinky..

How long is a piece of string?

Brake disk thickness will vary from car to car, what is safe on my MkI Golf is probably not safe on my MkVII Golf.

Should be engraved on the disk itself. Like below or as simple writing.

Along as it still works and don't get too hot.

Thats a balancing groove, not a thinkness indicator.

You may be right

I may be crazy
But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for
Turn out the light
Don't try to save me
You may be wrong for all I know
But you may be right

Guess Volkswagen hold the answer to this. And probably close to their chest

This is such a common Polo problem and to date I still don't know why it happens.

It should however state it on the "hub" of the disc printed.

Google says 22mm front and 10mm rear.

That's interesting. If that is the case vw barons then sold a car with the minimum amount of disk. My inspection report says 10mm.
