I am going to the US and will need a laptop while I am there (and don't have one to take with me).

I am not a technical wizz and in the past I have made the mistake of buying too basic a machine that I (or I should say, the software) outgrows.

So what is the minimum specs I should get? Processor, RAM, HD. etc. Any brand names you suggest?

I'm thinking 1G RAM, DVD R/W.... Should I go with Vista?

I don't game or have any seriously heavy applications to run. I surf the net, work on photos, do emails, keep accounts, write letters and reports... copy DVD's and CD's...

Once again, I will greatly appreciate the feedback. Thanks, in advance.

Processor = 2GHz or above
Hard Drive = 120GB or more
Memory = 2GB (but do the maths on how much it would cost you to upgrade the RAM later and go for that rather if it work out cheaper, just check how the memory on the machine is configured. If there is a spare RAM slot then you are going to save money but if you have to toss what is in the machine then that needs to be factored in)
Personally I think that memory is the key issue in all laptop purchases nowadays and you can never have too much

Non-integrated graphics is better but adds quite a lot of cost to the machine so you can skip it of you want to.

Personally I would go with Vista but make sure it is Business or Ultimate as you can downgrade to XP if you need to. Home Premium at the very least, though.

name one laptop that has more than 80GB in it? i want it...

the Q >> if you have a 2.4 cpu then 1 gb ram should be fine for about 4 years

the vista thing.. i you have worked on vista or are working on it now than go for it, but don't take the laptop overseas and then struggle with the software when you really need to use the laptop.

Apple Macbooks (Apart from the very entry level one)

120GB is becoming standard for non-entry level laptops. I have a Lenovo pamphlet here and every laptop has 120GB or more as standard.

thanks thanks, apple is apple though... and yes becoming is the key word
but glad to see that the world is moving up :)
