Minister, let's get real about broadband plans

I saw one of these CellC red bull starter packs with a R49 sticker on it, beneath it a R99 sticker.

Now this starter pack gives you 200 MB per month for 12 months and I saw a basket full of the stuff. Lets say the government takes R10 000 and redistributes these for R25 each for the relatively poor (Can't they change RICA so it doesn't apply for Data, but only SMS and Voice?).

And takes that R5000 they just got back and gives them for free to some students/school kids.
For R10 000 they would of effectively provided 300 people with basic broadband with.

Now the problem is the devices used to get these people connected and the screen.

I doubt the govt. would get involved with Cell C in this way, when they've got a huge stake in Telkom, and the fact that Telkom launched the identical thing in Nov2013 - http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadband/91247-telkom-mobile-launches-r49-internet-starter-pack.html

If the govt. felt sorry for the poor, they would've done this, or something similar, already. As long as they (cabinet members) have 20 & 40Mbps lines***, why should they worry about the rest. Same goes for redistribution - rather spend R200m on your own house (edit: mansion), than on upgrading the living standards of millions living in shacks.

*** = I'm only presuming that this might be one of their collective perks, but have no evidence that this is the case!
 
I am really intrigued by this Broadband Council move especially considering the fact that there already is an ICT Policy Review Panel etc ...
 
I wonder sometimes how politicians walk the tightrope between "towing the company line" and actually getting their own opinions/policies/agenda implemented.
This guy seems to have actually got some drive in him, and it's not the drive for personal material enrichment. I wonder how much of that is just him "towing the company line" (i.e. Government trying to repair some of the damage caused by the former minister to save face in an election year) and how much of it is his own drive to get things done and push the country in a positive direction.

yeah... we need somebody with the ballz to stand for what they believe in, and not blindly just 'be employed' and follow the party line...
need a guy who, even if ANC says 'no', could stand up and say "we NEED to do this, its the right thing to do"
JZ needs ministers who can challenge him
Come on Yunus, be the minister who can be known for the real positive changes you bring, not for just being another token ANC cader, who has the power to make a difference, but too useless to do it!
