Johannesburg - A Xhosa praise singer has come under criticism for shouting that a cabinet minister had a large posterior, The Star reported on Tuesday.

The young unnamed praise singer compared Agriculture and Land Affairs Minister Lulu Xingwana, to a "chicken with a big bum".

This was at the launch of Land and Agrarian Land reform Project and Land rights awareness Campaign, at Rockhurst Farm near Grahamstown.

He was reported to have said: "Le ntombi inempundu ezinkulu ngathi yinkukhu ehleziphezu kwamaqanda (This woman with a big bum looks like a chicken sitting on eggs)."

The comment was a metaphorical context of a chicken sitting on a nest of eggs that would hatch with great benefits for the people.

It didn't go unnoticed by Xingwana who took to the podium and laughed it off, before commenting that praise singers could sometimes make harmful personal comments.

At least she laughed it off and didn't went off on a tangent...
 
Wait wait, let me get this straight. You get someone called a praise singer?? What do they do, sing the government's praise at meetings, must be a very short little song, mostly mumbling by the party track record
 
'praise singers' are a traditional thing - they kind of announce the important person, whoever and where ever they may be, and yell their praises and get the audience worked up and fully informed, so that when the VIP finally talks - the crowd is up to date with who the hell they're looking at. Its an African thing, which predates any ANC stuff..(not sure which 'tribe' it might be specific to - altho I'd imagine its a widespread approach across many tribal groups).

Sometimes praise singers can play the 'jester' role as well, and take pot shots at the VIP's that wouldn't be allowed by anyone else.. hence the fat chicken bum thing :)

Great fuel for comedy..

If the thing was filmed - it'd be great to have that segment upped on youtube with subtitles.. any TV news coverage which has subtitles, someone should cap it and up it. A nice bit of dumb current news that deserves to live on, on youtube :P
