The title sort of says it all. Can I set up a Minix Neo X6, plug it into my TV, Connect it to my WiFi network on uncapped LTE, install the Showmax app and switch on and watch.

All that I read about the Minix says that it is basically an Android device with an HDMI output and a remote. If this is the case, what I am suggesting should work. if not, what is the simplest/cheapest way to go?

For that matter, will this work with a cheaper device?

To watch Showmax, the device must have Widevine installed on it. The only Android TV box that I know that has it is the Mygica ATV 582.

I read up a bit on the Mygica. Some threads say it works, other people have struggled. Does it work? Does it work out of the box?

Yes, I updated to the latest firmware, April 2016, and it still works.

I found the Droid boxes to be a massive disappointment, pumped out by various Chinese companies every couple of months. I think the new Apple 4 has showmax on it. Just keep in mind if your wanting to use unblocked Netflix apple TV is a pain to bypass.

The more I read about this, the more opinions I get. So, to confirm, you are running Showmax on a Mygica ATV 582, at full resolution (720p?) on the latest stock firmware?

Yes and yes. I got mine at Makro, would have taken it back if Showmax didn't work.

The CloudGate android boxes also support ShowMax. Although the older 2014 X8 model needs to be taken in to them so they can "include ShowMax compatibility".

What controller will work well with the Cloudgate box?

Edit: Just checked their website. Everything seems to be out of stock there and on Takealot.

I use one of those Air Mouse/keyboard combos. Hit up AV Supply, you should find one there.

I am running Showmax on a Mygica ATV 582, works like a dream. The only thing.. I would recommend using a mouse, instead of the remote that comes with the player. the Showmax android app is not really designed for android setup boxes, as it expects a touch screen, which means you cant scroll down with the standard remote.

I will admit I did struggle in the beginning, but that was my fault, I was playing with a root browser and I broke something which prevented Showmax from streaming, a factory reset later and it works well.

I'm using a wireless mouse, probably going to get an air mouse soon

I picked one up this afternoon. Installation and setup were truly painless.

Now I need to find out how to scroll below the bottom of the screen. It works fine on my phone, but I don't seem to be able to scroll down on the TV.
