CAPE TOWN – Only one minstrel association is refusing to play ball with the municipality to take part in the annual Tweedenuwe Jaar (2nd New Year) celebrations, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille revealed on Tuesday.
She says the council signed an agreement with the majority of organisations.
Every year, colourful troupes parade through Cape Town to mark the New Year.
Negotiations between minstrel groups and the City of Cape Town started in April this year.
But despite this, de Lille says the Minstrel Carnival Association refuses to agree to their terms.
The mayor says they have set aside R3,5 million to organise the event.
According to de Lille, this particular association, which represents about 30 troupes, wants to handle the money itself.
The group will now head to court.
For now though, the annual event will go ahead on 4 January and not on the traditional day of 2 January.
