I have a client that has a server which had a raid1 mirror set. I had to remove the one drive for reasons with regard to software. Anyways, I now need to put the same drive back. If I format the drive is there a possibility the clean drive overwrites the production drive when the mirror is rebuilding? I know if i put in a brand new drive thats fine, but putting back the original drive that has been formatted?

Never had this scenario before.

thanks

I'm pretty sure that the new drive won't have RAID information on it, which would mean that it would rebuild the new drive with the content of the existing drive.

I haven't done this kind of thing either - so please wait for more input!

Is it software raid or hardware raid? Hardware raid will manage/identify drives based on S/N.

Hardware raid. Anyways, decided the best option will be to clone the drive and if things go pear shaped start again. Called a few drive experts and none of them could offer any good advice.
