WASHINGTON (AP) — A Navy missile soaring 130 miles above the Pacific smashed a dying and potentially deadly U.S. spy satellite Wednesday and probably destroyed a tank carrying 1,000 pounds of toxic fuel, officials said

I think this is the frist time in history that a satellite has been intentionally hit by a missile. I think the fuel thing is a ruse, wonder what they actually wanted destroyed. Any conspiracy theorists out there?
 
or MAYBE it was simply a practice run and they're actually planning to take out ALL other countries' satellites, leaving them in the dark ages! Que X-Files theme song.
 
Maybe they just wanted to see if they could?

Not to worry though, there are a few people on here who will be around shortly to tell you that the satellite was actual a mind control device they planed on using on Iran to make them all docile for the "imminent" US invasion.

:) Good one.

They said the whole exercise cost $30 million. That seems a bit extreme. Wouldn't re-entry burn up have taken care of any sensitive electronics, besides the satellite must have been passed its sell by date thus the destruction. What would they want to hide that no one else hasn't discovered / thaugth up yet?

The satellite is brand new, it malfunctioned and never came online - so it is a cutting edge spy satellite. I guess that there are no guarantees that the critical components would burn up on reentry.
 
Didn't know that, surely a space walk on the next shuttle mission could have solved the problem.

As far as I know the thing was coming down and coming down soon.

Who can trust the US these days, they even lied about going to war

The orbit of the satellite was decaying, too close to the atmosphere to repair.

The bus-sized satellite -- known as US 193 -- became uncontrollable soon after its December 2006 launch, when its central computer failed and it lost power. It was estimated to be carrying up to 450 kilograms of hazardous fuel called hydrazine, encased in a titanium tank.

This is the 5th time IIRC, the last was by the Chinese early last year:

The Russians will try to shoot one down from a sub........watch....maybe someday...

This is one of the better military technology to have- sooner or later the space junks in the orbit will need to
be cleaned up.

Not. Blowing up a satellite does not suddenly force it to re-enter the atmosphere. Instead, it causes a huge debris cloud that forms a menace to other satellites. Depending on the orbit of the particular target, it could take thousands of years before the debris re-enters. In this case, however, the satellite was decaying already and the Yanks probably just wanted to prove their parity with the Chinese, who blew up a weather satellite last year.

Both the USSR and the USA have demonstrated anti-satellite weapons in the 80's, BTW.
 
The one got shot is coming down

There are thousands of satellites in the orbits , a way must be found to clean out the old ones or the space will run out of space , one day.....
