This may have been posted and discussed already.... but I just want to highlight the pathetic reporting on News24... haven't checked other sites so apologies :D
Firstly, the article:
Cape Town - A Cradock family have been left with egg on their faces after the American woman they reported missing - whipping the country into a frantic search - turned out to be playing a prank on their son.

Jenny Wormald refused to comment to News24 on Monday after it emerged her son Tex's so-called girlfriend was found to be safe in America.
...
...
Nikole Renaye Harris, 24, of Olympia in Washington state, called the family from America claiming she was at different places in South Africa, with her blood pressure getting low. She eventually lost contact with them.
...
...
"She apparently sat with a map and simply chose place names," Snyman said.

Now the prank has been discussed to death already, but when I read the articles in the build up to the discovery of the prank, I found these:

19/09/2009
Johannesburg - A 24-year-old American tourist en-route to Cradock in the Eastern Cape has gone missing, police said on Saturday.

Inspector Elmarie van Eck said the woman, identified as Nicole Renaye Harris, arrived at the OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng on Tuesday and hired a silver Volkswagon Polo.

She was meant to drive to Cradock in the Eastern Cape.

When she did not reach her destination, her friends filed a missing persons report.

The hired car could not be traced because it did not have a tracking device.

"So far we have no other leads, but we suspect she could be somewhere in the Western Cape," said Van Eck.

On her last phone call to her friends, the missing woman said she had past a Bloemfontein sign.

Police said the woman also suffered from low blood pressure. Anyone with information can contact Inspector van Eck on 082 301 8552.

Cape Town - A huge search is under way for a young American woman who has gone missing while driving to Cradock.

It is believed Nikole Harris, 24, of Olympia in Washington State got lost while driving from Johannesburg in her rented car to the family farm of her boyfriend, Tex Wormald, 24, for a surprise visit.

It is feared that she may have lapsed into a coma due to low blood sugar.

Harris hired a car on Tuesday and drove north instead of south. Staff at the vehicle hiring company apparently gave her directions to Cradock.

“But when she called me at 03:00 on Wednesday morning, she was already past Polokwane, almost in Musina (on the border with Zimbabwe).

I told her she was driving in the wrong direction and should turn around,” said a worried Wormald.

They quote the make and colour of the car... and apparently staff gave her directions?? Granted the word apparently... but still, surely you check the records at the car rental agency before you mention the car, the lack of a tracking device and that someone may have given her directions?
Pathetic!

@Mila, this is not about the girl so much as it is about the false reporting by news24.

I stopped using news24 though when they changed the site layout.

Cool, Cause when this started I thought : Freaking great for that SA guy in Canada.

I heard this on the radio last week a few times.

How would it be great for Huntley that someone may have been kidnapped or murdered or worse?

It would prove him right :D

?

I'm so tired of that happening. :(

I do not know about the tourists, not much i think? Last ones i heard of was the girls that were kidnaped and raped and left to die. A few years ago.

Prove him right how? That Americans are targeted by criminals in SA because they are American?

Huh?

So when someone decides to highjack you, they first struck up a conversation with you to hear if you are American or not? :D

ROFLMAO !

You killed me with this post :D
