My apologies if this was already discussed somewhere else, this forum is very vast.

My mother used to have a Standard Dual view decoder on DSTV Premium package. For her birthday we bought her a "baby HD PVR" and upgraded to the full PVR package.

As she lives in Pretoria and I in Stellenbosch my brother in law connected the PVR for her. Since the Dual View decoder also use twin LNB the connection seemed to be straight forward but since connecting the PVR some channels are missing but not all the time. All channels might be present for a couple of hours and then some "disappear". The program schedule is also not working properly as one can only see one program in advance.

The cables running into the PVR was switched around but did not solve the problem. Apparently an installer did visit this morning but could find no apparent fault with the installation inside and outside and as normally happens everything was working fine when he was on site. He did comment that the "eye", I assume the LNB, is not an "original" part and could cause the problem and to replace will cost R750.

As the installation has been in place for 6 years without any problems I'm not so sure about the last comment and cost. Just want to make sure that this could be a legitimate problem and not someone who sees a pensioner they want to take advantage of.

By eye I assume he means the TV link / TV eye, these cost R70....
This is what would be used to control the decoder from another room

As for the rest it should work perfectly with the twin LNB installation. The lack of TV guide data points to LNB 2 not getting signal, all channels should at least work though (in viewing mode) Just make sure that he connected both feeds from the dish and not 1 from the dish & 1 going to the other room

The setup is only to one TV set the "second TV" was for the video recorder. According to my mother he was pointing to something at the dish when he spoke about "eye".

I just received a message that the following channels are down - 112, 115, 120, 124, 126, 150, 151, 170, 172, 174, 180, 183, 184, 185, 198, 204, 231, 250, 251, 255, 261, 264, 305, 306, 308, 309 - are all of these on the same channel?

"Strangely" non of the 3 contact numbers he left to be contacted on should the problem re-occur is working, this after collecting his call out fee.

Maybe he said LNB which is the device attached to the dish. A twin LNB is more like R300 though
I think those are all horizontal channels which points to an installation issue, either a faulty LNB or the LNB/dish's alignment has gone out.
The HDPVR is likely more sensitive to the dual view decoder.

To re-align shouldn't cost you more then R200/R300, if he wants to replace the LNB & charge you R700 for it then rather go buy one yourself & call him out to fit it

are their names perhaps Michael/Barry/Malcolm?
Scumbags also did half a job at my GF and never came back

Found out that my sister got the guy's number of a lamp post in my mom's suburb! I'll find a MC accredited installer to go and have a look.
