MIT to launch $100 laptop prototype in November

I personally can't wait for these to become available over here. I just hope that it will be easy for the general public to get hold of one.

I just had to laugh at the guy saying $100 is still to expensive. Someone should tell him that , in South Africa at least, users will be expected to pay over $100 PER MONTH to be able to use the broadband Wi-Fi connection.

The whole point of this laptop is to be goverment funded(bought by them) and then given to children. There will be no retail-units available(as yet).

I think that this can work, especially with most of the municipalities looking at creating thier own wireless mesh. Seeing that it is for education, I guess they might just give the service to them for free.

and they will run Red Hat Linux after saying no the Apple's Max OS X for Free offer. No Windows either ...

Linux OS's are [I think] far too complicated for who they are aiming it at.

Can't believe they turned down Apple.

But i dont think the notebook is really powerfull enough to run OS X, i might be wrong tho

Remember, this will be a highly customized desktop. They will prob' use a WM like Fluxbox or Blackbox. They will also, most likely, lock most of the OS down, so that only minimal tweaking can be done.

I think that the whole thing will mainly be a web-access and typing system.
