Mitsubishi’s new “crossover MPV”.

New Mitsubishi Xpander Cross: SA launch of seven-seater ‘imminent’

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa has confirmed an “imminent” local launch for the recently revealed Xpander Cross, which will do battle with the likes of the Toyota Rush and Honda BR-V.

Billed as a “crossover MPV”, the new seven-seater is based on the standard Xpander (which was first introduced in markets such as Indonesia back in 2017) but gains SUV-inspired styling.

Interestingly, the Xpander Cross is some 50 mm wider than the standard model, with ground clearance hiked by 20 mm to 225 mm. It furthermore gains black cladding on the wheel arches and the lower sections of the doors, along with higher-profile tyres on the 17-inch alloy wheels. Silver-coloured roof rails have also been added.

The newcomer draws its urge from a naturally aspirated 1,5-litre petrol engine generating 77 kW and 141 N.m, offered with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

“Mitsubishi Motors South Africa started with the homologation process in preparation of the imminent launch of this vehicle in SA,” said Nic Campbell, general manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.

Mitsubishi Xpander Cross Coming to SA

Mitsubishi has revealed a new vehicle called the Xpander Cross and the good news it is on its way to South Africa

Touted as a 'family-friendly crossover MPV', the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is a fresh and modern product which will be going up against things like the Toyota Rush and Honda BR-V when it arrives.

Powered by a 1.5-litre motor and mated to a choice of either manual or automatic transmission, the Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is claimed to be the quietest vehicle in its class. Outputs are rated at 77 kW and 141 Nm. Despite it lacking 4x4 ability, the vehicle still boasts impressive ground clearance of 225 mm.

The Mitsubishi Xpander Cross is a 7-seater with practicality in mind. The 2nd and 3rd row of seats can be folded down to create a large storage area. In terms of features, Mitsubishi claims its Xpander Cross features a steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment, cruise control, programmable exterior lighting to offer features such as Welcome and Coming Home illumination, comfort flasher and headlamp auto-off, high-contrast colour instrument cluster and best-in-class air conditioning with highly effective cooling.

Due later in 2020, the XPander Cross is a compact seven-seat MPV with SUV inspired styling, and it’s likely to go head-to-head with the Honda BR-V.

Although MMSA has not made the local details available yet, we’ve found out that overseas versions are powered by a 1.5-ltire normally aspirated petrol engine that produces 77kW, and the crossover offers best-in-class ground clearance of 225mm.

Mitsubishi Xpander Cross for SA

Late in 2019, Mitsubishi revealed the Xpander Cross and it might be coming to South Africa.

The new Xpander Cross was launched in Indonesia last year and has since also gone on sale in the Philippines and Thailand in March 2020 and it's proving to be popular and Mitsubishi has now launched the model in Vietnam.

But what about South Africa? Well, in November 2019, we reported that the Xpander Cross would be introduced in South Africa based on this comment from Nic Campbell, General Manager of Mitsubishi Motors South Africa, “Mitsubishi Motors South Africa started with the homologation process in preparation of the imminent launch of this vehicle in SA.”

However, while the local introduction of the Xpander Cross has been delayed, possibly due to the impact of Covid-19, it appears that it's still on the cards. Campbell recently commented, "The addition of the Xpander Cross to our lineup later, will offer new experiences for dynamic and energetic customers in South Africa." He further added, "We are investigating the all-new Xpander Cross for South Africa to a wider range of customers who are looking for style, ruggedness and practicality."

Why Mitsubishi’s local model line-up continues to win hearts

Coming soon

The Mitsubishi Outlander is no stranger to the South African market and excitement is mountain for the introduction of the 2022 model.

“Full pricing and packaging will only be made available once we have details of its arrival in SA,” enthuses Campbell. “Needless to say we are extremely excited about the future design direction the all-new Outlander will give our customers.”

Also on the cards for the not-too-distant future is the Xpander Cross. The Xpander Cross is a family-friendly crossover MPV built with solid SUV styling, comfortable and pleasant drivability, as well as a practical and versatile interior design.

Expectations are that both will go a long way towards reaffirming Mitsubishi’s status as a frontrunner when it comes to identifying customer demands and shaping its new vehicle strategy accordingly.

SA pricing: Mitsubishi Xpander compact seven-seater arrives

Mitsubishi has entered the compact seven-seat segment in South Africa with the launch of the Xpander. Imported from Indonesia, the Mitsubishi Xpander is priced at R299 995 in manual guise, and an automatic version can be had for R319 995.

Conceived as a compact MPV with an SUV-inspired exterior design, the Mitsubishi Xpander boasts a ground clearance of 205 mm. It goes up against the

Inside you’ll find flexible seating for seven, with a third row that can be folded completely flat when not in use. The boot also has a lidded floor box designed for the safe storage of smaller items. Storage compartments beneath the seats and 120 Watt power sockets for every seating row round off the practical touches you’ll find in this family-friendly vehicle.

There’s only one engine option and this takes the form of a normally aspirated 1,5-litre petrol unit that produces 77 kW and 141 N.m. It can be paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

The Mitsubishi XPander keeps things simple in terms of spec too, with one specification grade being offered. But it does at least appear to offer all the comfort features you’d want or need, including automatic climate control, with rear overhead cooler, electric windows front and rear, multi-function steering wheel, touchscreen infotainment system with reverse camera, dual front airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Sadly side and curtain airbags are not part of the deal here, nor is any form of traction or stability control. Surely these features would be deemed important in a family car?

WATCH: Deep look at the 2021 Mitsubishi Xpander multi-purpose vehicle (MPV)

Due to the ongoing impact of the pandemic, Mitsubishi Motors South Africa couldn’t physically host us at its Xpander launch today in Gauteng. However, the company has invited us to invite you to take a glimpse behind the scenes. Combining the traditional versatility and practicality of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) with the rugged and sporty looks of a sports-utility vehicle (SUV), Mitsubishi says its latest seven-seater Xpander is ready to take the highly competitive South African market by storm.

Xpanding on a global success story

Based on the XM Concept that was first showcased at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show in 2016, the production version of the Xpander debuted at the same event a year later, before going on sale in Indonesia. It caused such a stir at the Auto Show that more than 11 000 pre-orders were received. To meet this unexpectedly high local demand, the Mitsubishi Motors plant in Indonesia had to double its monthly production output.

The plant now feeds markets in the Philippines, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Bolivia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sri Lanka, and South Africa. In 2019 the Xpander was Indonesia’s most exported car, with well over 64 000 units finding homes in countries abroad. In the four years since the Xpander was launched in Indonesia, it has raked in numerous noteworthy awards and accolades.

REVIEW | Seven-seat Xpander has potential to become Mitsubishi South Africa's cash cow

• The Mitsubishi Xpander uses a 1.5-litre engine that pushes out 77kW and 141Nm.

• Pricing starts from R299 995 and is currently Mitsubishi cheapest model on sale in SA.

• The model on test makes use of a four-speed automatic transmission.

Mitsubishi - like Ford and Renault - no longer have sedans in their local line-ups, and the reason for that is relatively straightforward actually. The five and seven-seater SUV market is booming and automakers are ditching philosophies that once proved fruitful, i.e. sedans. Instead, they are moving with the times and giving the market what it wants.

Mitsubishi's last sedan to grace South African roads was the Lancer. Since its discontinuation, their current line-up has been overrun by SUVs like the ASX, Eclipse Cross, Outlander and Pajero. The Japanese brand has put all its eggs in one basket - so to say - with so many bigger-bodied options on sale. The latest addition to that fold is the seven-seater Xpander, also doubling as the brand's cheapest model on sale at the moment with a starting price of R299 995.

South African vehicle consumers can be compared to that family member who believes in only one way of doing things. Translated, they often stick to the tried and tested and sometimes pricier options because of long-standing brand allegiances. But Mitsubishi South Africa believes that locals will warm up to the award-winning Xpander.
