Hey,

Does anyone have experience with these cars, what known issues are there to look out for?
Does 1000km open road and 750km town driving per tank sound about right as far as fuel consumption goes?
I know fuel consumption depends on other factors as well.

Service intervals are 15 000km, is there any additional maintenance needed for diesel cars?
The car in question is in a good condition bar two tyres needing replacement, 2006 model with 114 000km on the clock, so it is nearing a major service.
It is full house, with sunroof and mag spare wheel.

Taking the above into account is R120 000 a fair price?

The car will be used mainly for town driving, and I also intend getting a motorite maintenance plan to go with it.

Any advice/alternatives I should be looking at?

Check whether the cambelt has been replaced on 105,000km because that is at least R8000 for that at VW. If it has 15/16" rims, tyres will be expensive because of the odd-size VW use. Turbo, if looked after, should last to 250,000+km easy.

If you drive it like you should be driving a diesel, you should get 1200km on the open road easy if you fill the tank to the brim + venting; I did 1000km easy with my 1.9 TDi Polo. Around 850km in town.

Alternatives? I went for a 2.2 Diesel Honda Civic as opposed to the Golf 5 when I replaced the Polo. Build quality comparisons aside, the Civic is much prettier in HUGE for a hatchback and it is built to last. I has done 62,000km and has not needed a wheel alignment when checked, as n example.

I'm looking in the 120k price range, because with the maintenance plan added, that is as much as I want to spend at the moment.
What did the Civic diesel set you back.
Thanks, I am checking the service history with a dealer, will be sure to look out for the 105 000km service and what was replaced.

Polo's are a bit lighter(body) so will be lighter on fuel then as well right?

The car has 17" tyres, 225 width, not sure about the other dimension, I presume it is 45 though. Will be checking tyre prices.

The golf is nice, I had the 4 and sold it with 250 000 +- k's on the clock, however the turbo and injectors were showing signs of wear and they are not cheap to fix or replace.

But at that price I would probably go for it. Only concern I have with 2nd hand diesel cars is how the previous owner drove the car. Most people don't have a clue how to drive a diesel.

You can buy mine, 2006, 115000km, FSH, cambelt done, new turbo, new clutch, been an open road car since I bought it at 70000km, I averaged 5.2l/100km over the last year.

Did you blow the turbo?

The old one kept putting the car in limp mode, vanes had some wear so put a new one in. About a year ago. Absolutely love the car.

Mine used to do that as well. Drove me nuts! They are great cars.

Where are you situated. Is it a sportline? What price? Is the cambelt service on these cars at 105000km's?

I did cambelt at 90000km, and its R5000 for that full service if you know how to talk to the stealers. In Centurion. 125k neg. And pending arrival of my new Ranger company bakkie :) yes, all the 2.0tdi's are sportlines, oh yes, and I just fitted new battery and shocks. Pm me.

Damn I'm in Cape Town. I never knew all the 2.0 tdi's are sportlines. Good to know.

Remember the car you are looking at is now almost 7 years old. Make sure its had all its services, dealer should give you a copy of the printout from their system. Mine was serviced annually as the previous owner only managed 70000km from 2006 to 2011. Car components do age. My shocks were still the originals and I thought my car handled great, then I drove my colleagues 2.0FSI (same car but petrol engine) who fitted new shocks (monroe sensatrac's) now it's even sweeter. Iv driven many cars over the years and also had a 2008 GTI. Still, the 2.0 tdi is the most enjoyable to drive, overtaking is effortless, and you can cruise all day in the fast lane knowing you'r burning less fuel than 90% of other cars. It handles better than anything in its class. Don't stress about the turbo, these motors are very reliable, and if it does go bad, you can get a re manufactured one(good as new, don't let others make u believe otherwise, with a 12 month guarantee for about R5000. I only use 50ppm and I change my oil every 7500km (cos maybe I have too much free time on a Saturday morning) I couldn't talk you out of buying one if I tried. My only recommendation is to have 10k cash stuck away, just in case something goes wrong. I wouldn't waste the money on a motorite warranty, they don't cover much, check the fine print. Oh and only visit dealers for the regular services. Go for it, you wont find a more rewarding car for the money. Oh yes i also replaced the turbo boost pipe which perished from age I guess. Cost R960, could have got it for R250 on ebay but I needed my car and couldn't wait.

Thanks for that, still really interested in the car.
I was looking at warranty and service plan options, will definately read the fine print of those now.
You just made me want to go get the car today!
