Cape Town - The Public Protector committee has selected Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the last woman standing to fill Thuli Madonsela’s shoes.

Mkhwebane was lauded for her great communication skills, her experience, and her interview skills.

Her age, and how she conducted herself, was also praised by MPs.

She was a lady of guts, Inkatha Freedom Party MP Themba Msimang said, while African National Congress’ Grace Tseke said she had a fine brain.

MPs waxed lyrical about her international experience, and called for Mkhwebane to be nominated for the job.

Approval

National Freedom Party MP Sibusiso Mncwabe said she was outstanding during the interview.

“She is a very brave, young but experienced black female and she has worked for that office before,” he said.

Tseke said the advocate had a sound understanding of procurement act in the country and made a good candidate for the post.

“Her communication skills were excellent. She answered all the questions that members of Parliament had asked. I recommend her to be the next public protector, she has a fine brain,” she said.

ANC MP Werner Horn said they were are feeling ambivalent about the candidate, while ANC MP Bongani Bongo said she was right for the job as she could hit the ground running, as she had worked for the office before.

Mkhwebane, a State Security analyst, even received a stamp of approval from Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema, who said she was close to what the country had in Madonsela.

He had heard rumours that she was a President Jacob Zuma candidate, but that had not come across in the interview, he said.

However, he said, decisions could not be made based on Zuma as he would not be around forever, he said.

“She is going to be a public protector beyond Zuma’s term of office, so even if she was a Zuma candidate, he will not be there at some point.

“We are appointing her to a well-established institution, with rules and established practices and investigators, and if she tries any shenanigans, the institution itself will expose her for who she is,” he said.

That’s what made him comfortable to recommend her as the public protector.

The Democratic Alliance’s Glynnis Breytenbach said she did not have management experience, while the African Christian Democratic Party’s Steve Swart said she was a candidate that seemed to have consensus with most of the political parties.

The parties agreed to table Mkhwebane's name, but the DA reserved its judgement on the issue.

The public protector committee had a mammoth task of finding a replacement by the end of August for public protector Thuli Madonsela.

They had their first meeting in May, and by August 24, had settled on Mkhwebane after a quick meeting on Wednesday.

The five candidates were judges Siraj Desai and Sharise Weiner, advocates Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Muvhango Lukhaimane, and Professor Bongani Majola.

The candidate will now be recommended to the National Assembly by next week.

You know it's a good candidate if the DA has nothing to say :D

Not keen on reading that wall of text. Only on thing interests me anyway: Is this a Zuma puppet? Yes/No?

Heard on 702 the DA apposed the individual, no reason given though?

Thx BBSA

What they did say on 702, although the youngest candidate she has worked in the PP office before for a fair amount of time, was calm and measured during her interviews as well.

She has previously worked for the State Security Agency - Not a good sign.
She only has two years actual legal experience - but then neither did Thuli Madonsala have much.

Mkhwebane gets backing for Public Protector post - despite misgivings

While the EFF supported the appointment of Busisiwe Mkhwebane to be the next Public Protector‚ the DA expressed concern about her lack of experience as well as her working as analyst for the State Security Agency.

EFF leader Julius Malema remarked that Mkhwebane was the closest that the country had to the current Public Protector Thuli Madonsela‚ whose non-renewable term expires at the end of October.

Malema made this remark on Wednesday as the special ad hoc committee appointed to nominate the new Public Protector‚ sat to decide on the five shorlisted candidates.

Mkhwebane was shortlisted together with Judges Siraj Desai and Sharise Weiner‚ Adv Muvhango Lakhaimane and Bongani Majola.

Glynnis Breytenbach‚ DA MP‚ said Mkhwebane did have legal qualifications but said her experience should not be overstated.

"It was not a managerial position. If the legal experience of [another candidate‚ Judge Sharise] Weiner was found to be wanting‚ then the legal experience of Advocate Mkhwebane should be found wanting‚" Breytenbach said.

Breytenbach said she could not get an answer why she changed a job as a high-flying director in home affairs to a low-level job at the State Security Agency.

"For that reason I cannot support her‚" Breytenbach said. Steve Swart‚ from the African Christian Democratic Party‚ also mentioned his concerns about her move from the home affairs department to the State Security Agency.

"This is a matter of concern." Phumzile van Damme‚ said although Mkhwebane gave an exemplary interview‚ she was uncomfortable about that fact she had never practised law for more than two years.
