I have a about 15 MKV movies but only 2 play via the ps3 media server. All the other files say unsupported format or freeze ever 2 seconds or so while playing. Any advise?

I think it depends on the type of modem/router, distance and wired/wireless.

These all affect the quality. Most of my MKV files also dont play / lag however transcoding does help sometimes.

You might get better results with some of the media files using the latest Windows Media Player: You can set it up to share media on the network, and the PS3 should be able to pick that up (pretty much like PS3 Media Server).

Long term this turned into too much of a mission for me: Some files played with PS3 Media Server, some played with Windows Media Player, and some only on VLC.

Changed it with the Mede8er and never looked back. Not saying Mede8er or nothing: Just that I have found even a cheap dedicated media player much less of a hassle than trying to use the PS3 as media player.

I DON'T CONDONE THE USE OF ILLEGAL GAMES**

If the OP doesn't mind using a CFW (Custom FirmwWare) you have to be on v3.55 and below to use it, then you can use Showtime. It handles ANY mkv file aswell as all other media formats out there. The developer has just recently released v3.0 and soon we will be getting Digital Audio support aswell :)

If you would like help, PM me as discussions of this nature are tricky on the forum.

Regards,

Yuu

PS
Your best bet IMO is if you cannot come right with streaming and using CFW then getting a media player as stated above is the easiest / safest / less hassle solution.

I had the same issue - it seemed to be performance related... as mentioned earlier.

Just convert with mkv2vob to natively supported .mpg format, very quick on reasonable spec PC.

On your ps3, when you locate the file, open the folder called transcode. Then find the Mkv you want and select the file called tsmuxer or something.. It's usually the 2nd one.

Have the same issue. It is only certain mkv files that do not work, others do.
So my conclusion so far was, that it depends who converted the file and what codecs were used.

Thanx. Worked for a few files. I think i should invest in a cheap media player. What's the price range these days for one with Network Capabilities?
