Hi

Anyone know if samsung has some sort of firmware upgrade on the DVD home theatre systems that will allow .mkv formats to be played of a usb mem stick/hdd ?

Very unlikely. Products that offer firmware upgrades often make it a strong selling point. Its also unlikely companies like Samsung, LG, Sony, etc offer MKV support (its too new).

There are however a lot of players that do offer that support. Google is your friend
