Anyone know of an encoding app that can read .mkv files? I have a couple. I can play them just fine with MPlayer, but I would like to play them on my DivX/XviD capable DVD player, and it doesn't recognise the .mkv extention.

VLC should also do it for you. :)

VLC lets me export to DIVX (amongst others)

Of course ffmpegx will also do the job nicely - nice GUI too :D

Yeah, I can choose DivX for the codec, but it won't let me select the AVI container - it just remains greyed out.

try ffmpegx then - imo its much nicer than vlc for this sort of thing anyway.

ffmpegx won't open the file - doesn't recognise the format, strangely enough, since mplayer uses libavcodec (which is the decoding library ffmpeg uses) to decode the mkv file. Bizarre.

Oh well, my notebook (Linux on Turion64) is much faster anyway, so I can just as well use mencoder to do the job.
