I have some videos that I'v downloaded and they have a MKV file with languages, the English .dts is one one I use to mux with the mkv file using mkv merge GUI. In the process I untick all the subtitles cos that is annoying when they are already in English. But the problem I have is that no when somewhere in the movie where there is foreign speech there are no subtitles for that either. How do I remove the english subs and not the important ones I need?

You can't :(. I usually use ConvertXtoDVD and and watch them on my DVD player.

ConvertXtoDVD allows you to keep the subtitle stream, but turn them on and off
at any time during the video.

You can by doing the following.

Fine out the release name of the mkv you have.
Goto subscene.com
Search for above filename. Most subs for English will let you know if it is for english speaking or not and you can preview them :)
Download & Add into mkv Merge Gui
Mux and bOOm! you are done.

If you require more help, just PM or shout here.

Enjoy :)

Or just get a Media player that can play Mkv's, i got one for a friend last week for R500, they are cheap nowadays. That way you never need to convert or anything :)

Thanks Yuu. But I cant seem to figure out how to merge the .sub files in GUI and as far as I can see they still have the same problem though. BTW using another media player will not help this as the .mkv still has to be merged with an audio.

You can change the setting of the subtitle view in the MKVmerge GUI settings before muxing - after selecting the relevant subtitle file, make sure that the Default Track Flag and Forced Track Flags are set correctly - either can be yes or no, depending on how you want the subtitles to display.

I always remove other subtitle languages from the MKV, select not to Default the English subtitles, and select to force the non-English subtitles track (if applicable to that film/series)

To merge a SUB file into the MKV, download from subscene (per above from Yuu) - you will usually find an "English - speaking parts only" for those films with foreign language parts - when your MKV file is opened in MKVmerge, click on Add, then navigate to your downloaded Subtitle file (idx, srt, etc) - make any changes like the forcing the Eng speaking parts file, then mux.

I think the problem you're having is finding the English only speaking parts sub file?
