This is where the future of law enforcement lies.

Johannesburg - Two men were beaten and burnt to death after being accused of robbing a woman of two cellphones in Diepsloot, Soweto, on Saturday, Pretoria police said.
According to police spokesperson, inspector Paul Ramaloko, three men attacked a woman in Diepsloot's extension seven and took two cellphones.

"The woman then blew her whistle, mobilising the community, and two men were caught by community members and one of them managed to escape.

"The men were beaten and then necklaced to death (car tyres were put on them and then burned)," said Ramaloko.

"The woman's cellphones are still missing and she has opened a case of robbery and police are also investigating a case of murder.

No arrests have been made."

"The men were beaten and then necklaced to death (car tyres were put on them and then burned)," said Ramaloko.

The necklacing thing is certainly something seperates us from the rest of the world wrt awful ways to die. Jeremy Clarkson (at the MPH show) made a quip that it was only two years ago that we realised tyres could be used on cars :D

It was quite handy to have the car tires and the petrol nearby.

People are getting seriously g@tvol with crime and the police' lack of desire to combat it, so mob thinking isn't a surprise!!!

But necklacing (for mugging) puts another issue on there... What about being "Wrongfully accused" ????!!!!??? Mr President please take note of what's happening around you. (err sorry I noticed the walls, guards, dogs and secret service around you so it seems you're very interested about your own Safety first..very Presidential of you)

whether (this article) true or not, I'm losing respect for news24 and their sister publications everyday for their lack of credibility in their stories. There is no Diepsloot in Soweto.

Thats true! Diepsloot is like SOOOOO far away from Soweto. I wish there was a comment things at the bottom, then we could have pointed and laughed...

That is a bit strong for petty theft.

Not really. If the word gets out that even a petty theft can get the death sentence then I think crime will drop to almost zero.
Plus it's a good way to get recycle used tires :D

And I thought chopping hand/fingers was bad.. ;) But more seriously when mobs start to take over handing out justice you know that policing as failed infact it drags the whole system down. Yet come next elections these same people who whine about the situation will vote for no change.

Yeah but at least they got caught, judged and sentenced in a couple of hours. No rat punk lawyers defending the criminals human rights.
What if it wasn't them? Why were the cellphones not found?

It also highlights a problem with introducing a death penalty. Then again, would you be willing live in a country where you could be falsely accused and sentenced to death but knowing atleast some of the real criminals got the noose/injection as well or let them run amok like they are currently.

The death penalty is a different story entirely. Firstly, there is a court of law tasked with establishing guilt, not a person who can just blow a whistle willy nilly. Secondly, in the event of a death penalty, there is an extraordinarily long legal process to follow after the guilty verdict and the sentence is handed down. Many, many appeals are followed. The chances of an innocent person slipping through the cracks are incredibly small - in most cases a guilty person probably stands a greater chance of getting off the hook, especially in this country where our prosecutors are completely useless (as is evident with our extremely poor conviction rates)

To answer your question, if it means that the extreme and worst cold-blooded criminals in the country are permanently removed from society and also no longer are legible to be a burden and participate in societal events (like voting), then I would definitely prefer living in such a country.

Yep.

Why study for a law degree when you can hand out street justice without one ? Hell, we can all be lawyers and judges now !!!!
