How come all the mobile ISP's (Mtn, vodacom, 8ta, cellc etc) all give so little data with their contracts?

Eg. Vodacom Smart Medium @ R299 per month gets you 120mb of data. Who uses that little data on a smartphone?
Fine I can understand if you're not into smartphones and only use the internet to look up questions of "Who wants to be a millionaire" at night. I know the topic of Why Is Mobile Data So Expensive? is an over debated topic. But seriously, why do they give so little data and then charge ridiculous amounts OOB when DSL is so cheap?

you've answered your own question - "charge ridiculous amounts OOB"

greed [griːd]
n
1. excessive consumption of or desire for food; gluttony
2. excessive desire, as for wealth or power

Since I have never seen 2 apples per meg I think #2 is relevant.

Remember that not very many people have good ADSL or even ADSL to begin with, if Telkom would lower their fees and expand access enough to attract more consumers I'm sure 3G prices would reduce to stay competitive, atm competition is pretty much non-existent with regards to 3G and ADSL competing against one another

Hi there,
It is largely because they can. THe package you have to rememebr is not always linked to a smartphone but to the non-smart devices where the occasional millionaire question is looked up.
You also have to remember that the 3G network is also a best use service and does not have unlimited capability.

Regards

Tim
