Hi Guys,

I have a samsung galaxy 2 II, i generally use twitter alot, get around 20 emails a day, use whats app quite a bit and then surf the net rarely.

Yet i use around 40mbs a day??? I but a 1.2gig data bundle through cell C and iv only got around 500mbs left.

What uses so much data? How can i reduce it?

Please help, cool thanks

Sheesh, I make a few calls + sync during the day and use WIFI at home and I don't use more than my R135pm Topup contract ;P

I suggest rooting your phone and installing something like Droidwall and blocking internet to everything you don't neet internet for, but take care not to block important stuff like Emai/Calendar sync.

So for example I tell some apps they can get online but only from WIFI but not 3G etc;

How are you checking your data usage? I have found the data manager built into Android 2.2 is hugely inaccurate. It hugely inflates data usage. Download something like 3G watchdog....it is more accurate.

You could try disabling background data and auto sync. You would then have to manually open your email and twitter apps to get the data. AFAIK Whatsapp should still work fine.

It seems that there are applications running in the background which are constantly refreshing and thus using data ...
Make sure things like your widgets are not automatically updated . Do the same for your email ( change the update time to a longer interval ) .

You can also make use of the application usage widget that comes on the S 2 and allows you to end any applications running in the background.)

Thanks guys, Im going to download my data manager and see whats up..

Rather go with onavo, its got a soft firewall in it and has all of the paid features of MDM for free, it also has an online repository of abusing apps and will alert you when installing if you have a friendly or unfriendly app.
3G whatsdog is about as inaccurate as the 2.2 manager, but it misses data usage.

The onavo firewall as i said is a soft firewall, it has no and needs no root access but so basically if an app is blocked from 3g access it just kills it each time it tries to access background data so said app will still work if you trigger it yourself, so basically if you open say facebook it will work, but if facebook tries to access data when your phones in idle then it will block it by killing it.

3G Watchdog can list the data usage per app which is very helpful for tracking down data hungry apps.

Turn off auto-sync in account and you can even turn off background data so that the apps only access the internet when you are actually using them and have them open.

In a few months the S2 will get Android 4.0 which comes with built in data monitor and limiter , that should solve all your problems

3G watchdogs about as accurate as a dart board, complete waste of time and cpu cycles.

+1

I also have a SGS2 and found 3G Watchdog to be completely useless for tracking data usage. For me, the unknown data use was due to auto upgrades of apps, especially Skype and Opera Mini had frequent updates

I use ussd checker widget. It keeps me up to date based on vodacoms actual numbers.

Turn app auto updates off. I found a setting to enable auto updates for all apps but only on wifi.

I use it as well, it works well if your data usage is pretty lite and you have found out all your phones kinks. Onavo is good for the newbs and the new phones to work out which apps are abusive that you dont actually need so you can remove them.

I have onavo and ussd checker on my moms wildfire and i can confirm that onavo is 100% accurate What vodacom says i have left + what onavo says i have used is exactly what the month started off with.
Onavo also reports abusive apps to its own network so if you install an app that's abusive it improves the overall accuracy of the app as well as when you install an app that has been reported you will get an alert warning that said app is known to be abusive.
