Uhuh, that's going to happen in South Africa, operators helping each other for the greater good, rather than lining their own pockets? Yeah right.

That's the one thing of telecoms i never really understood.. because to me, it seemed obvious that physical infrastructure vs service can be separated at various points through out. But i think this idea is sorta like a uhm LLU of cellular stations.

Anyways it might be heading that way in certain parts anyway because not everyone is a happy chappy with a plethora of base stations covering the same area not to expand service area but to accommodate multi-operators.

btw don't they already do something like this within public indoor areas? like large malls etc?

...says Pal Zarandy, Principal Consultant of Omnitele. He also states that new radio infrastructure technology in the form of single base station units supporting both GSM & UMTS technologies is instrumental lowering operational costs.

First & foremost, is that even a technical reality|possibility or is he referring to a mast with both [but separate] 2G and 3G radio equipment on the same mast? - I assume not the latter due to the references to UMTS900.
