Mobile Photography: which orientation is right?

I think I am getting old and do not understand why someone would take a photo or Video in portrait view.

Selfies I understand but general video and pictures in portrait mode just does not make sense.

I, personally, always use landscape. I don't take selfies so the only time I use the selfie camera is when my banking apps require it for verification.

Portrait does have its place but it's like the youth today does not know they can turn their phone on it side for a better picture.

I use whatever the subject calls for.

Can't say I'm particularly enthusiastic about portrait video, not in the slightest, but I guess that's what social media lends itself towards.

It depends what the purpose of the footage is. Portrait for social media, landscape for everything else
