I was with a client this week and talking about load shedding. He pulled out a Huawei mobile WiFi router as an alternative to DSL when the power is down so that office staff can carry on working. This looks like a good answer for home use too.

I have been looking around on the internet for a similar device, but there seems to be a limited range of devices like this (or I am looking in the wrong place).

This is the sort of thing I am looking for:
TP-LINK M5350 - http://www.rebeltech.co.za/wireless...reless-3g-router-3g-mobile-wifi-24ghz-80.html
Huawei E5832s - https://www.telkommobile.co.za/devices/detail/huawei-e5832s

Are there other options, perhaps something you use and are happy with?

What is the battery time of the devices when in use?

The sort of price range for these things appears to be approx. R 900. Is that about right?

Thanks be thine in advance... :)

The E5331/2 was being handed out by afrihost when they launched mobile services. They lasted 4-6 hours on battery. My ford focus charger port remains on when ignition/acc is off, so they lasted a longer time for me.

If you get one, ensure that it has integrated modem as the ones that require are not as good

I have both and I will prefer the TP-Link model - only caveat with TP-Link is that you cannot connect it to a PC to use as a dialup modem like the Huawei....

The TP-Link battery is bigger and last longer - 6-7 hours.

The only downside to these routers is that they don't support external antennas.

I have a spare Huawei E5331, you can have it for R500. Brand new

I still have one of them and use it daily... up to 8 devices can connect simultaneously.

Esquire have the ZTE MF65 - 10 users - for R549 ex VAT. Up to 21Mbps... http://shop.esquire.co.za/ProductDescription.aspx?id=3548500

Thank you all for the feedback. Need not be afraid of the Huawei name, then :o
