Hi. I want to use my laptop-screen as my tv. So it should be simple. My dstv-decoder got a rca(Video-out) that can go to my laptop s-video in. Then somewhere I should tell the laptop to take input from the s-video-in. So in DisplayProperties/Settings/Advanced I choose the Displays-tab. It displays Monitor/Panel/TV options, but the TV is not "active". Although I am kicking the laptop, thinking it does not pick-up the signal, it might be the decoder not really sending a signal through.
Any ideas please?

Just a question, you SURE that is an s-video in on your laptop?

Absolutely Ziglet, it's an old IBM Thinkpad a31. S-video in and S-video out.

Normally the displays tab will be for TV out, if you connect a TV to the TV out it should show on the displays tab. Dunno how you will get it to display via TV in without a program of some sorts.

S-Video in with MPEG-2 video-capture capability on A31p only

so, you will need some sort of capture program ot be able to view it..if you have the a31p
like, windows movie maker (preinstalled on xp) and the like.

getting sound should be funny, seeing as svideo carries video only. you may have to get an external amplifier and plug that into the dstv decoder, and then some speakers also

Sound is sorted already. From the decoder I am running a red&white to the single-plug in the sound-in in the laptop. So far sound is the only success I got. Still downloading drivers etc to make sure there was'nt a svideo-in driver I am still missing.

Comming back to the video, I have'nt thought of your idee, trying to view it via another program. Will try that thanks !

Thanks Renamed20070410, you were 100% correct, Movie maker got a option to receive input from S-video in. I can get the video. Now I will go find out how to view it on the full-screen. Thanks so much for the help.

Sorted out. Found ATV2000(Freeware) that display a nice full screen of TV. Also found that on my Samsung Big-screen TV I do not get the complete picture. Tonight was the first time that I saw that, on the Weather (SABC2), they give temps for Ldz/WalvisBay on the west-cost. Was completely cut-off on my tv-set.
Thanks again for the help to put me on the right track!
