Modded Firmware

Yes.

Make sure you have WRT4G v.4 or below if it says v.5 anywhere you got a problem.

I have messed around with a couple of firmware's, bricked my router and unbricked it a couple of times

After my personal experience I'd go with the DD-WRT firmware available at www.dd-wrt.com

Hi

I use dd-wrt on mine. I reckon it's the best "easy" firmware. I was using Freeman (hacked/free version of Sveasoft Talisman) but dd-wrt has added a lot and now has even more features than it. Other than that if you really like doing everything yourself theres OpenWRT or Freifunk (OpenWRT with a web interface).

As for the hardware, get WRT54G versions 2,3 or 4. The version 5 doesn't let you load custom firmwares but there's a WRT54GL. The L means you can load custom firmware basically.

Freifunk has actually got a really nice web interface, so its not that difficult to manage. However the OSLR plugins and other such items which are included with Freifunk are more more a mesh type network, so if you dont need these capabilities then go for something like dd-wrt.

Choc

L in WRT4GL stands for Linux which is open source and allows firware mods. The on the OS that the V.5 runs is called VXWorks.
