I was driving down Modderdam road in Bellville and I noticed that over the name of the street, it was painted white and then Robert Sobukwe Road.

Has this street name been changed and if so, what is the purpose of this?

Yes, they started painting it a couple of weeks ago. Because Modderdam clearly is a very racist and/or offensive word...

Why don't they remove "people" names from all roads?

It is bound to "offend" someone out there.

I saw Pretoria CBD for the first time in 2 years or so on Monday, with Sygic satnav leading the way via my phone. Poor lass in the box didn't even try to pronounce half the names; spelt them out rather. :D No... wait... :(

My old neck of the woods.

The word modderdam itself means nothing...well perhaps 'muddy dam', which may have been the way it was 100 yrs ago....so why not name it after a person.
I know there is a 'Botha' St in Goodwood amongst numerous other names...which Botha again?? Naas? Good heavens.

Anyway...over here in Sydney's suburbs there was a road that was for very long called 'Poole Rd' after some forgotten person. Then a short new road in new suburb next to it was called Samantha Riley Drive (an ex swimmer from Queensland 900 km away). Later this was extended across an intersection to join up with Poole Rd...eventually Poole just disappeared off signs and the whole 4km now Samatha Riley Drive...so an unknown name replaced by an ex swimmer fromanother state...the only connection is 'swimmer'and 'poole' I suppose.

Point I am making is that most of these names are irrelevant, not many care really.... perhaps councillors trying to recognise a hero...so you may as well rename 'muddy dam' with the 42nd greatest South African ...better than Malema.

So if they're changing the street name......would that mean that Modderdam High would be renamed as well or what?:wtf:

First time I went to Pretoria CBD I drove on Church street looking for Kerk street . :p

Why don't they rather name new streets after people instead of renaming current streets?

It's an apartheid legacy, get rid of everything the white man had a hand in. It's something like the brick house's up country who are being demolished so they can be "renovated" BECAUSE they were built pre 1994. The ANC government cannot add on to those house in 2013 for some reason. So instead of building new houses for squatters they demolish already built house's in which families are living and who now are squatters again.

Clear history of the white mans hand, next will be Mitchell's Plain and Atlantis.

That's still better than being directed to *DOUBLE-YOU EFF EN KAY OH EM OH STREET*.

:D ... and on Satnav systems and printed maps, I stay on "5th street". My street is marked "vyfde street". Good thing is according to traffic department records, I stay on 5th Street.

Sounds like the ANC are trying get people annoyed with the PAC. Anyway, why should Durban have all the fun of driving over dead terrorists?

That was going to be my next question. My brothers and sisters used to go to that school.

Modderdam High is so politically active that they mmight just opt for that namechange. They've already renamed Bonteheuwel High to Ashley Kriel High because he used to attend school there.
