Hi guys,

To my shock I found out (from Smittie at WBS) that the modems are locked to the account you got with it. You can't use a different account on the same modem - promise, I tried...

So I'm wondering, a friend of mine who's aiming to move to greener pastures (NZ, OZ or somewhere else) in the not too distant future, is thinking of getting iBurst, because the technology is used elsewhere too, and apparently much better implemented than here.

Will this little account issue be fixable with a firmware update or something without making a R3000 paperweight?

Thanks

This is something enforced by WBS when you connect - part of authentication, it is not something on the iBurst modem itself. If you are thinking about using a WBS iBurst modem elsewhere in the world e.g. Australia or visa versa, then forget it - the frequencies used are different here to Australia.

Heya

Well, first off, they may well be on a different frequency to us... If not there may be a chance to use the unit elsewhere ... but the ISP would have to enable the utid on their network....

Initial indications from WBS was that roaming across iburst networks would be supported but, who knows these days.

As to getting your modem to work with different usernames, you can get wbs to unlock it's use to SPECIFIC accounts...good luck with the helpdesk ;-)

I was reading some forums on the Ozzie iBurst and they definately use a different frequency to us. Someone post about the South African Firmware updates, and got smited because the ZA firmware would **** up your Ozzie UTD. Different Frequencies. I don't think a ZA UTD / UTC would work in Oz.

My beta test unit was a 2.3Ghz unit ... had to be returned for a 1.8ghz one went they switched to their own frequency.. I would guess it's hardware but some with more technical knowledge may be able to provide conclusive info.

Forget Australia, use them in Africa

"And it will also expand into Africa, with plans to go live in Ghana within two weeks. Mtshali says this will mean i-Burst subscribers travelling in Africa being able to access their broadband without paying any roaming fees. Other countries on the expansion map include Angola, Algeria, Kenya, Mozambique, Botswana and Tanzania. "

Less that 2 weeks to go now. Good luck Ghananians. (Maybe this is where Dylan went - just a thought....)

you can have another account with the same modem, the UTID + account linking is software controlled at the authentication server, if you ask them to change that account to use a different UTID they will. It's just because they use username + password + UTID to authenticate when you dial in. I've had 2 accounts with my one modem before. It's as simple as requesting a new password.

Hahaha this is so funny its a lie, about 2 weeks ago i tried my friends username and password on my UT-D and guess what it worked and we were like WTF.
Maybe not all modem UT were locked to username

no it didnt, its locked to the account, trust me, I tried when the 2nd account expired, and i trust me way before i'd listen to any trash you say

The account lock is done on iBurst's side through the RADIUS server.
So they will be able to lock the UTD to another account.

Yes it does work

hey slim
I have used my account on multipule utd's and it works fine, even works on the laptop cards. Cannot connect onto more that one device at a time.

well not for me, so theres some inconsitancy with who they do and don't lock to UTID's

They seem to have a lot of inconsitancy in their whole approach to business and customer relations. I am just waiting for that asdl to drop low enough to justify the cost and I'm gone. I have been investigating 3g as well and it still has a way to go before it will be cost effective. Does anyone know what the wimax status is at telkom? Rollout plans?

Don't forget that they lock the UTD to a range and if you get from an ISP say interprise, you find that the acounts are locked to inteprise's range of UTDid.

From WBS themselves you should only be able to access using one UTDid ... unless they changed things.

I tried 1st July with about 10 username and password I had from friends only 2 were working the others couldn't connect, Invalid username and password but yet again the other 8 were on the net. So maybe no multiple users are allowed on IBURST network.

They've have also put in Place some sort of DDOS software if u disconnect and reconnect to the iBURST network more than 10times in 1 hour or so then it gives u invalid username and password this stays on for about 10mins then u my reconnect to iburst network.

HAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAH do you even know what DDOS means? No i don't think you do, that is to stop users using macros when capped and receiving full speed for 20 seconds/disconnecting and doing it again. Disotributed Denial of Service is something else alltogether
