I use a Huawei k3565 Modem via vodacom for internet --- problem arises when I plug in my flash drive - any flash drive on any usb port, my modem stops working OR pc will NOT access flash drive - any suggestions as to what I should check/change pls ???

System Details are:
Intel Core2 E5500 @ 2800MHZ
Gigabyte G41MT-D3 Mobo

Try plugging them in far apart, because it can possibly be a power issue.

What I've also seen many times was that if you don't have an available drive letter between C - F, that Windows won't create a drive letter for the flash drive either. You then have to go to Computer Manager -> Storage Devices (or something like that) and change the Drive letter of the Flashdrive.

OK I have previously tried the far apart to such ann extent that both modem & flash are connected on extension cables, 1 at the front of case, one at the back... same result. As far as the drive letters go, I am using as follows :
c: 1Tb system, d: 1Tb backup, e: DVD-rw, f: virtual Alcohol 120%, g: system allocated auto to modem software h: virtual Daemon Tools, i: virtual Daemon Tools, -- the system auto allocates k: to my memory on the modem(strange, that one, it gives it as a removable drive) yet when you click on it, it asks for you to insert a disk into drive??? Can this have something to do with it???

aaaahaa !!! Thank YOU Pada !! Inadvertantly you helped me solve the problem... I disabled the (extra) drive the modem created and voila ! It all works perfectly - mem stick goes in and is imm. available, modem functioning correctly, all hunky dory ta again..

Cool stuff :)

I think if you simply change the flash drive's letter, then it would use that letter again when you plug it into the same USB slot again at another time.
