Just got my new E1820 modem with the 5GB bundle this afternoon.
I connected it to my PC an hour ago and began surfing the web. However, I am being disconnected at least a dozen times in the past hour and have to continually re-connect.
I am based in Killarney, JHB. Anything that I can do?

Help!

So, I decided to give MTN the boot, and went and got myself an E1752 (white modem) from Cell C, loaded up a new SIM with data... and have almost pulled out what little hair I have left this morning!

I've tried everything, but the bloody connection keeps dropping after about 4mins! Checked everything I could online - even downloaded the new dash that someone linked on these forums, and still every 4mins, the connection drops. Signal strength is at 92% most of the time, with a solid dark blue light.

I thought it might be an OS issue (I'm running Win7 64-bit), so I went round to my brother's place, and installed it on his pc (WinXP), and lo-and-behold, it worked perfectly - no disconnects!

I can't seem to find any firmware or software updates for Win7, so I'm at a loss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You're in a bad coverage area it seems. It worked out of the box on my Win 7 64 bit

Could be that your USB ports provide insufficient power. Try other USB ports on your PC (especially those at the back) or try a powered USB 2.0 hub.

I would recommend move around the house and find the sweet spot- I noticed in my bedroom for example I couldn't get any signal to use 3G, now in the lounge and able to use 3G, until I am covered.

Cool, thanks for the replies, guys. I tried again at my brother's place, and noticed that it seemed to connect through the MTN towers (the irony), not Cell C. Also, back at my place, the modem runs REALLY hot. This would indicate a power problem, amirite?

I tried most of the usb ports on my pc, and most yield the same results. I DID however, notice the following: the longest I remained connected for was 20mins, and on a separate occasion, I managed to download a 150MB file (rather quickly!) before it died again.

Will definitely try everything you've suggested, and post all my results here.

If you have weak signal the modem get very hot. Most probably your problem is the signal.

Cell C does not use the MTN network at all. Their 3G network is their own and does not piggyback on any other network. You're thinking of 8ta.

I'm experiencing the same thing. I've got full signal and tried on multiple pc's but it keeps on disconnecting every 2 mins or so. I've noticed that the stick does get very hot. But it used to work fine for the first week. Any suggestions?

Try if you have inserted a micro sd card, remove it. It increases the power consumption and makes the modem really hot. -fixed my problem.

the white dongle will get hot, had the white dongle for some time and after 3months the heat went away doesn't get as hot as it use to be, also my black dongle does the same, if you worried about how hot the dongle gets, get urself usb extention cable or a router

The Cell C dash I used on my brother's pc showed that I was connected to MTN, not Cell C at all.

I haven't inserted an SD card into the modem, either. I checked MDMA and it read -87. The Cell C dash reckons I have 92% signal strength.

Try disable UAC or run the cell c dash as administrator. If you are running Kaspersky(or any AV that has a firewall) make sure that it isn't being blocked by adding it to a trusted network; also make sure that the cellc dash is a trusted application.

I had constant disconnects on my PC and notebook, both running Win 7 x64. Got myself a router and I had no issues anymore

Ok. Moved house this past week - my area falls on a dark red spot on the coverage map. Only problem is I can't even get the modem installed now. Before I moved, I uninstalled it, but plugging it into any port now just brings up driver installation errors. I'm at a loss here. Can't say i've ever had such a hard time with any piece of hardware or software. Could someone maybe provide me wot some sort of step-by-step walk-through?

same story here. net with cellc used to be fine, till recently it disconnects often. when i say often i mean alot. and constantly switching between 3g and hspa.( wasnt doing it previously either). if im getting 40k on cellc i get spoilt. whereas i was getting 400-500k.

decided to throw in the towel with cellc and resort bk to my vodacom, as they can actually afford 2 maintain their clientbase.

Fixed the frequent disconnect problem here simply by plugging the E1820 modem into a powered USB hub ... no more hassles ... <touches wood> hopefully they don't come back :)
