So yea, i dont know if this is where to put this but here is my problem:

A few months ago i got a new modem for wireless internet, but ever since i began using that new modem (as the old one was broken too) i have not been able to use any internet application such as MSN messenger, patch games and have slower internet, as it says "could not connect to the internet" or "failed to apply patch"; many friends have said "your ports are blocked" but offer no solution
So just wondering whether anyone knows what this problem is and how to fix it.

Much thanks

You'll need to give us more detail. Your post was very vague.

Opening the ports shouldn't make a difference, since you don't need open ports to patch games and connect with MSN messenger!

Mk, i will try as specific as possible.

I bought a new Modem to connect to a wireless router, because my old modem would not work. After setting my computer to this new modem, i received a bunch of problems:

1) When i try to patch a game, it will say could not connect to the internet, please make sure you are connected or close your firewall. My firewall is off and i can go onto the internet too.

2) A similar problem, when i try to use applications that require the internet, except internet explorer, such as MSN messenger, will not connect to the internet either.

I have used the 'Repair' function on connections page on control panel, but to no avail and have tried to reinstall Windows many times and again to no avail.
The problem is that I can access the internet, but not use any application and all this occurred when i used my new modem.

I am on Windows XP if that helps

OK. That still doesn't help us much.

1) Post your router brand and model. eg. D-Link DSL-2500U
2) Who's your ISP and what kind of account do you have? Mweb 384kbps consumer uncapped
3a) Open Command Prompt and run the following:
Code:
ipconfig /all
nslookup www.google.co.za
ping www.google.co.za
tracert -d 41.203.21.137
3b) Now copy the output and paste it here

Router: DSL-502T

ISP: Slingshot 25gb cap full speed (150 mps, 280 kps)

Time out was 2 seconds.

hope i did it right....

I've never heard of that ISP + the info that you gave about it doesn't make ANY sense!
There is no way that an ISP will give you 150Mbps down and 280kbps up. The difference is way too big, AND South Africa doesn't have the infrastructure to provide that kind of download speed to home users.

Also: you haven't given me the 'ipconfig /all' output!
Are you using the USB port by any chance!? You should always use the Ethernet (LAN cable) when connecting to the router for Internet access!

I suspect that your problem lies with your ISP and not with your router - UNLESS you were using the USB port.
