Ok blonde question. But can the I-burst modem be "struck by lightning" and if it can I take it the modem and computer go *kaplooy*?

IMO the modem itself can't be struck. The extermal antenna can. And the antenna uses cat5 cable which is a GREAT conducter.

Yikes - lightning is one of dem things that can do whatever the heck it feels like doing.
With or without an external antennae...
Lightning can travel from the wall into the power lines into your modem into the PC's USB/Ethernet port and wreck your PC.
So - having protected your PC from power surges, if you don't also protect everything else that plugs into your machine from power surges, you are at risk.

Wrong.
Most PC's was damaged by lightning with dial-up connection (telkom+modem). Dangerous voltages was INDUSED at telephone line against grounded main (power). With wireless connection your system is many times safe! Only DIRECT strike can damage the system. But it is no any defence against direct lightning.

Your Modem can also get Fried maybe if there is an overload on the ESKOM side.

My UTD lan port as well as my router wan port were zapped on thursday last week after the storm. I run my ethernet outside for a short stretch, it must have hit somewhere and somehow travelled through my cat5.
So yes, it can be (your lan port anyway). I bought little surge protectors that fit onto the cat5 cable just before they plug into the utp ports. Hope they work
P.s the modem still worked fine through usb though.
