Hi Community

i'm a complete newbie and i need some assistance. i'm considering switching from 3G to DSL and have a few questions regarding the hardware i need for my requirements.

what i want is a 4/10mbps internet connection (afrihost seems to have a great deal)

i also want to be able to create a home network between all my devices:

xbox
ps3
WD TV live hub - to be main distributor of media
WD TV live player
laptops and tablets
mobile devices
and i'm toying with the idea of a NAS

should i get a modem/router combo or seperate devices , barring in mind i'd like to change the router's DNS to one provided by unotelly sothat i can have access to HULU and Netflix (dstv sucks and costs too much)

please can you guys let me know what's the best way to achieve this

thanx

Router = DSL modem + Switch

Just get a router, not sure why you would want separate devices.

Go for a good and expensive brand, not less than R750, TP-Link, D-link, Netgear N300 (DGN2200) and maybe even a ASUS.

The reason some people go with separate devices is for lightening protection. usually just the ADSL modem gets knocked out which is fairly cheap, and your expensive router is saved.

Otherwise no real reason to go separate in my opinion. Also means if you need to trouble shoot, you have two devices to worry about.

Personally, i have a separate router and adsl modem.

Same here. Cheaper modems mean I can buy multiple of the same to cater for lightning damage.

Can't do that with R2k devices

after having 2 modem/routers fried within a month last year I went the separate route, had a strike this year that took out the modem, but left the router relatively intact, only fried the WAN port, I've now got it running as a wireless bridge, so even having them separate is no guarantee of protection

Hi Guys

I ended up getting a pace 921vnx vdsl modem/router only issue is I have no idea how to set a static DNS Ip on it so now i have to configure each device with the Unotelly DNS everytime i want to use it.
