WHile my ADSL line is down I have manage to re-connect my old USR Courier V Everything modem.
Connect speed is shown at 42.6Kbps and on Network Connections properties I have all the boxes ticked (hardware flow control, modem error control, and modem compression). Speed is set to 115200.

Speed is terribly slow, not just compared to ADSL but compared to what this modem speed connect should be doing.

Is there anywhere else I can optimise in XP to improve the throughput?

Thanks

Joel

42.6 is the best ure gonna get out of a dial up modem.
5 or so KB
Telkom guarantee's 36Kbps

I am not looking for faster than 42.6 I am looking for the 42.6 to act like 42.6 and not like 2400 baud!!

It took a full 5 minutes for this page to load and some are taking so long that they are timing out.

There has to be some hardware vs software compression or MTU type settings that need to be optimised.

Someone please give me some tips before I pull my hair out!

Seasons Greetings

Joel

With dialups, virusses and spyware can really hurt your speed. Make sure your antivirus is updated and that it is a good anti virus. Use a Anti Spyware program to check for spyware (this will send and receive information over your connection which will make it slow.

Also you could try reinstalling the modem with updated drivers, but I think it's most likely the virusses or spyware.

Good luck
