The cartoonist who created the idea of a "Draw Mohammed Day" (and then retracted it after receiving many death threats) has had to drop out of sight because of continued threats to her life.

The gifted artist is alive and well, thankfully. But on the insistence of top security specialists at the FBI, she is, as they put it, "going ghost": moving, changing her name, and essentially wiping away her identity. She will no longer be publishing cartoons in our paper or in City Arts magazine, where she has been a regular contributor. She is, in effect, being put into a witness-protection program--except, as she notes, without the government picking up the tab. It's all because of the appalling fatwa issued against her this summer, following her infamous "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day" cartoon.

Come on, Islam. Targeting defenseless cartoonists is your latest adventure in bravery? That's pathetic. It's bad enough to be the religion of hate, but to be the religion of cowardice ought to leave you feeling ashamed.

Yes... their religion is rather a sad affair... cowards and hypocrites...
with not one (% anyway) that will come forward against this hatred acts... worthy of the devil :(
 
And if these people do manage to kill her, there will be celebrations, but we all know those celebrating, while praying fives a day, will be the incorrect Muslims. They will once again prove the stereotype to be true.

Honestly, branding an entire religion like this? Erm.... anyone can twist a religion to suit their own agenda. I have many Muslim friends and they are the most compassionate and decent people you will ever meet. Stop with the intolerance already, intolerance is what causes wars, hatred and human suffering.

I so sorry, I forgot that it us atheists that are the intolerant ones, the religious are the tolerant ones, just have a look at their rule books and their priest cast. You would not expect Nazis to be tolerant would you.

If this is your logic it's stupid of me to try and debate the facts with you. Religion in itself can not be intolerant, people are... people who make comments like the above are INTOLERANT. You can be an atheist, Christian or Muslim and be either tolerant or intolerant.. you can be a murderer or someone who cares for people deeply. It IS INTOLERANCE and not religion which is responsible for human suffering and wars and crap.

did I say that? as I said above, it is not religion, belief or atheism which causes this rubbish but failure to tolerate any belief outside of our own. Much like comments made by TonyHawk above.

Religion is a set of rules or doctrine, generally has intolerance of other views build into to it. That is how people are able to use religion to be intolerant. People get the instructions on how to hate others from their religions. If you don't see that, then I would get another infraction for pointing out what you are.

Just to be clear, I am not defending religion because I am religious in any way. I did grow up in a religious home though and all I was taught was to love and accept others, no matter what their religion.

Here is where you totally fail at thinking for yourself ... when you simply ASSUME that you already know all the answers. Religion is always open to interpretation and who does the interpretation? People do, it's a cheap tactic using religion as an excuse to act violently.
 
I suggest that it is because of the values and tenants in religion that allows people to use it to be intolerant. If the holy books say kill this one, the believers can say and do say, In šāʾ Allāh (God's Will) that I kill her. If there was no law/verse/text for the act in the holy books, do you think that the followers would be able to kill her, because it is the will of their God ?

Correct in principle, but it is the religious leaders who issue directives such as Fatwas. If a majority of the members of a particular religion have the guts to speak out against such leaders, and such leadership, then the problem goes away. Luther took on the Catholic hierarchy. The problem never went away entirely, and Catholics and Protestants fought the 100-Years War in Europe; continuing their rivalry in Ireland almost to the present day.

To be fair, however, wars - even so-called religious wars - are about the same things wars are always about: land, power, access to resources. The reasons for wars are economic and political, but it takes religion to work people up to fever pitch and promise them limitless rewards in the next life if they kill in the name of the Creator.

As long was we have leaders who are corrupt, rotten, greedy and power hungry, and people silly enough to listen to them on whatever grounds, we will have conflict. Christians have only just emerged from the Dark Ages, just ask the Bosnians. It seems that too many of our Muslim brothers and sisters have yet to move on.

I can't help but agree with this comment from the site posted in the OP:

It is a crying shame.
I tell myself that it's only a small minority within Islam, but then I wait in vain for an ashamed reaction from the majority of said religion.

I wonder of they pray so many times because they deliberately sin so many times, killing innocents seem to be a Muslim sport!
 
I don't wish to join the Islam bashing parade any more than I want to bash any other religion, but this is a pretty absurd thing for a cartoonist to have to do.

Yes, what she initiated was rude, disrespectful perhaps, but it was to prove a point that is being driven deeper by the reaction it has received. Where are the voices of reason in the Muslim community? I am totally certain that the vast majority of Muslims strongly disagree with the situation, so where are the cries of dissent?

Except that the deafening silence from that vast majority suggests that not only do they not disagree, they in fact tacitly approve of these vile actions.

Have I ever mentioned how much the followers of organised religion disgust me?
