So with Molten heading towards 5.4.2, me loosing my only copy of MoP, and my budget being to crappy to support downloading it, I've got a dilemma on my hands.

Is there anyone in Pretoria, preferably Brooklyn/Hatfield area who can copy their full game files from WoW(retail 5.4.8 or Molten's 5.4.2) for me?

I would be ever so grateful.

Private servers seem to have taken a massive rise lately as people don't seem to like the direction Blizzard are taking with the game. Lots of people seem to prefer playing on private servers running WotLK for this reason. I guess it's a lot like Ultima Online. Most people playing UO today do so on private shards running old expansions because EA completely ****ed up what was good about UO.

I used to be very outspoken against private servers, but nowadays I don't see a problem with it unless people are actively profiteering on running one.

Well, nostalgia of playing an older expansion is one. Majority play on private servers cos they don't want to pay :p

But what's the point? You invest so much time/effort/whatever into character/experience that is completely meaningless.

It's utterly stupid.

Isn't that every video ever?

Video?

Anyway, what tends to make an MMO worthwhile is the community, the in-game achievements (raids, acquiring special gear, events, etc), server reliability and all those wonderful things that a pirated MMO simply can't give you.

What's the point of a cock-measuring competition when the competition's not real? :p

Also, there's just a sort of peculiar masochism about playing a pirated MMO. It's like playing a slot machine for fun with no chance of any reward.

I just want my vanilla wow back. In fact... Please also return SWG, AOC and HG:L as they was, but obviously BUG fixed. God knows the iterations / expansions of today is just meh.

There PVT servers still running only up to Lich King?
Those were the good days when the spec tree actually WAS a spec tree
Now that I wanna play again.

What's the point of doing anything then?

Some of us enjoyed the older expansions and want to relive the experience. Some of us don't like the direction that blizzard has taken with the game. The new content is fun, but not very challenging.

I would kill for a chance to raid pre-nerf SWP again. Or TK. Or BT. Or SSC. Just thinking about it makes me want to hop on the nostalgia train and travel back in time.

There are private servers that do have relatively large communities. I played TrueWoW a bit in 2011 and up until level 40 (after which I stopped) I ran into people very frequently and never had problems finding items on the AH or getting groups in the dungeon finder.

As for the cock-measuring thing- what cock-measuring thing? Is it so hard to fathom that people might play games like WoW because they actually enjoy them?

The point of it all--the gear, the achievements, the rare items/mounts/armour/pets that get farmed to hell. You know, the motivation for it all?

WoW's loyal community (and, in fact, that of any MMO) may have a partial interest in the story but they stay for the stuff.

What's the point of the finest gear in the game if you can't compare it with anyone else's? If you can't show your character off? If it all means absolutely nothing in the context of the real game.

You don't honestly believe people raid again and again and again to the point of being blue in the face because they actually enjoy it, do you? They do it to farm items. And why do you think they do that?

For the story? Yes. Only a handful of people, if that, bother really paying attention to anything more than the "Do this, do that, repeat."

WoW is a great MMO for a plethora of reasons but it is a casino game, like 99.9% of all MMOs and without the tangible reward that the legitimate experience offers, it is nothing more than an idiot mindlessly grinding away.

Some people just enjoy the leveling process and raiding. I got several characters to level cap in WoW (and the same goes for other MMOs) and I rarely play them after that. I just enjoy the journey to 80. Unofficial Ultima Online shards aren't exactly popular because people want to grind away for rewards. ;)

Yes, there are a lot of people who play for the sake of reward and I don't see any reason why it's any different on a high pop private server than an official WoW server. The experience isn't 100% comparable, but you've still got plenty of people to compare yourself to and show your gear off to.

On the TrueWoW server I played in 2011 Orgrimmar and Stormwind often had more people in than most medium population official WoW servers had. Don't underestimate how big some of these servers are. If we're talking about the small servers averaging less than 1000 regular players, then I agree with you that it's a bit pointless playing on them.

There are some still running vanilla or BC. I saw on RPGCodex the other day they made a thread for a vanilla server.

There is also the worldofcorecraft server coming out, 2.4.3 with 2.0.3 content. Going to be awesome.
