To upgrade from XP to 7 you need to do a clean install, no upgrade.

That depends if your current hardware can manage Windows 7/8!

Probably what his mother wants is backups of word documents,pics etc.

Still would be cheaper to buy a new notebook than purchase a copy of Windows 7/8, then getting someone out to install the update
