I would appreciate a commodity, if it isn't too much trouble for me to make use of it. For example I don't want Kruger Rands that I have to store in a safe, or if I didn't already have crypto to now have to get a wallet with a passphrase etc.
But it would definitely be more interesting than a cash gift, and I would keep it in that form until I needed the money.
If given the choice, I would always choose cash, though.
I'd reverse the question and say it's dependant on who you're giving it to. If this is meant to help improve wealth/welfare (ie. a significant amount), it will depend on the maturity and judgement of the receiver. Cash is more versatile, but is easier spent on unnecessary items or absorbed into things that weren't part of the initial plan. So if the receiver isn't good with money, or they're young and it's something that you want to grow with them, or even if you want to just ensure it's used for a specific purpose, then definitely commodity. Otherwise cash.
I prefer a gift/ actual item over cash any time. Well most times.
Apart from the effort it shows, it's many times something new for me.
Friend got me a nice whiskey the other day. Wasn't something I might normally have bought for myself and I really enjoyed it, has opened up new options for me now.
Same with books - wife will often choose a book for me as with Kindles and Amazon recommendations it can be easy to stay safe in your little echo chamber.
Got this helicopter experience as a gift before - again not something I'd normally spend money on but really glad I did it.
And then sometimes you get proper gems - like a Lego set i was given ages ago - actually started me down my Lego collecting path.
So a gift/ experience for me.
