I am new to ADSL and have had in my first month a heavy usage. I am looking for a way (software if possible) to monitor which programmes are downloading from the web. I have disabled the ones I know. But there are still times when some programme is downloading and I cannot find the source.

www.sysinternals.com

There is a program called tcpview. Lists all network pipes, and what program has them open, and lists to what IP and port it is connected. Very useful. Assuming you running Windows

I recommend starting with http://www.netlimiter.com/ - the freeware Netlimiter Monitor should be sufficient to start with.

PS: Welcome to MyBroadband :).

Either that or get a decent firewall and allow what you want to transmit through.
You can still use a program like netlimiter to monitor what you have used and what might have slipped through if you arent very clued up with firewalls.
Oh and make sure you turn your windows auto-updates off!
