Hi All, hope you're well!

I've got an employee who i am convinced is busy downloading torrents all day on our work DSL line even though i have raised it with him and he denies it.

How do i monitor if he is busy downloading torrents? Would a packet sniffer be able to tell me?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Block all P2P protocols on the router, then whenever you walk past his desk LOL real hard!

Use Kerio Firewall. There is a windows version and a Linux version (linux runs better and is very simple to install).

You just need a PC box with 2 Lan Cards and you have to point your Gateway on the DHCP to this firewall (firewall can be your DHCP as well).

You can see traffic in real time and see amounts of traffic for each users or IP.

You can also block traffic and see who is being blocked.

Hi All, thanks for your suggestions and sorry for my lack of response. Been away on courses etc...

I got our ISP to put a software onto our Linux based gateway/firewall called nTop! So far its working really well and gives me detailed graphs and info on usage per IP etc... Anyone else here used this before? What did you think of it?

http://www.untangle.com/ is another good software. will have to use a PC with this software install on it. Read up on this might help some other admins out there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've briefly looked at this before but didnt ever end up trying it. Maybe i should do a little trial of my own and see what it can do. Thanks for the suggestion.

Since you are using a Linux based gateway, why not look at this:
http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net/
http://l7-filter.sourceforge.net/protocols

You can block based on regex, including torrents and even skype.

Interesting! I'll defs take a look. Thank you

ntop is pretty good, but I find it sometimes used to bug out when I used it. The process would just crash and then you would lose the history for that period it was down obviously. It is the most robust simple solution that I've used though. Would also be nice if somebody could work some css magic with those pages, it's dang ugly.

Luckily i haven't experienced the reliability/crashing with nTop yet. Although i do agree that it's not the prettiest thing to look at!

Hahaha! That would be easy to check...
Indeed! He knew before i said anything that i knew he was talking ish.

Some people

What else is the shyster stealing from you? Time? Ideas?
Nah i dont think so. Hope not!! Lol.

He's an innocent guy. Think he's just trying to get all his series and movies without using his capped account at home.

Not on my watch buddy! :P
