We enjoy playing Monopoly with friends and family for as long as I can remember

Monopoly (game) - Wikipedia

Found this article today and thought it was very interesting.

Especially the part about landing on a piece of land that no one owns.
3. You don’t have to buy or auction a property if you land on it

“Many players think that if you land on an unowned property and don’t wish to buy it, you can skip past it, but this simply isn’t the case.
“When a player lands on an unowned property or utility, they have first dibs on purchasing it for the listed price. If they choose not to buy it, the property is immediately put up for auction by the banker. Every player can then bid on it, including the player who originally passed on buying it.
“Any player can set the starting bid and the property is then purchased by the subsequent highest bidder.”

I'm pretty sure this rule only came into effect later to make the game faster and more enjoyable for everyone*.

I honestly never remember this rule at all, will check my manual when I get home

I love playing this game, especially on the X-Box. There are so many rules that can be tweaked according to your liking.

As I always say, house rules apply. It depends on whos house you are playing at, their rules will apply to the game.

If they want to auction, you auction. If they don't know about that rule and they choose not to auction, you do not auction.

That makes sense then, I never thought about looking at monopoly on consoles. Thank you

It is like R200 or something there about.

It makes cheating harder, kind of takes the fun out of the game for me personally. lol

The first time I was introduced to this rule was when playing a version of this game for MS-DOS on PC.

Property auctions were a custom rule you could set. If you didn't have enough money to buy a property, you were forced to auction it.

However, this could also work to your advantage of other players didn't have enough money, since you could then get the property at a bargain price.

Depending on the game, in most cases, the player who's turn it is, can mortgage properties before running the auction, but other players wouldn't be able to.

That's why it was always a good strategy to have at least 400 available to you at all times, even if it means mortgaging some properties.

Interesting. I thought only Hasbro was allowed to alter rules, honestly thought it was a patented thing. Seems like anyone can now come up with their own version of rules

Ever tried Monopoly Go?
I enjoy it. Nice if you don’t have as much time.

As kids we used to play monopoly for days! If you went bankrupt, you could sell your piece for a few thousand bucks and use your finger instead
