Monovarietal Olive Oil

So can you recommend a locally available brand I can buy to taste the difference?

I'll need to try more local ones. Since i usually only buy overseas ones.

I'll pick up some brand names people mention here and see. Also i assume we're talking extra virgin right? because even in europe the difference between normal olive oil and extra virgin is very much palatable (and the cost).

Unfortunately I have to agree with you...

In Stellies we have Tokara and Boschendal wine estates (amongst others) who make olive oil, and I used to think they were pretty good.

Until we went to Portugal and tasted the ones from the wine estates there... OMW, the stuff there you can just drink it straight out of the bottle

Yeah wine i won't argue with. I love USA and i've been to some really posh wineries in California and they can't hold a candle to most estates in the Cape lol.
In Dec i plan to try French ones more and compare.. but i reckon we'll still hold our ground on that one.

The flavours, the aromas, the smoothness, etc.

One thing I've noticed here is that most olive oils tend to taste the same. Not so in PT, each producer has a distinct profile.

As someone who's had Olive Oil since a baby from farms on Greek Islands and Italian olive farms i can say with very much certainty that their quality far far far exceeds what South African can produce. Its no terrible here, but it certainly is not up there.

if we're talking Wines, i'll say fine South Africa wins. But Olive Oil? No way you're beating the Med countries.

I only buy my olive oil from Greek or Italian delicatessens.

The oil I am currently using is from Tunisia and superb.

A friend of mine is a production manager at Babylonstoren. They have imported the best presses in the world from Italy and I have had the oils as it streams off the press and it is spectacular.

It is all subjective though...but currently the best olive oil in the world is from South Africa: De Rustica

It beat out a 1 000 other oils, most from Greece and Spain.
