Month to month contracts

Does anyone except Virgin offer a month to month contract from inception? (Ie, without the 2 year contract initally followed by month to month)

I had heard about Vodacom trying to do something like this but I couldn't find the information on their website

I think Vodacom do and maybe MTN too, there's just no free phone obviously.
