Pretoria street names to be changed
11/09/2008

Pretoria - At total of 27 street names in Pretoria's central business district will be changed to reflect a "shared heritage", the City of Tshwane said on Thursday.

"This is so that we may create a new African capital city reflecting a shared heritage, identity and destiny," said council speaker Khorombi Dau.

"Given the history of the city and how some of the streets were named, it is imperative to change some offensive names which still reflect a colonial and apartheid past," he said.

tbh we should all just go stand at the name , take their paint whatever tell em to go **** emselfs instead of doing something.

In Durban people are spraypainting black over the new names, or breaking them off.

I don't understand the point of view !
As far as I know from South African history, the fist inhabitants in South Africa were bushmen (Khoisan). Whites came in 16th century in Western Cape, Northern Cape and then in little part of Eastern Cape, before Xhosas came. Will the government erase the Xhosa's names in Western Cape to respect history ?

Zulus went in Natal in the 16th century. Can we consider them as settlers and then colonialists ?

According to history, Afrikaneers, Zulus, Xhosas and others can be considered as natives, as Bushmen are now a small minority.

Zulus (and Bantus as a whole) killed Bushmen and drove them to Western Cape. Will the government blame Zulus and others ?

Is there an historian in ANC ?

I feel like taking the "initiater's" balls in my scissors and giving the scissors a gentle squeeze...

Of course this Historian is from the ANC but honestly If they truly want to keep everyone happy make it a duplicate name . Tzhwane/pretoria or the other way around, then again every street in Pretoria will have Nelson Mandela behind it, seeing that they don't have any other history.

The amount of administration needed for this is phenomenal - as well as the confusion caused! Now so many people have to update their maps, mailing addresses, etc.

Big disappointment for me they are even thinking of this again.

"Thinking"? They can't think. Too stupid. Honestly.
Apart from the fact that Paul Kruger street has absolutely nothing to do with apartheid, it costs a heck of a lot of money, lots of admin, maps to be changed as above, yada yada yada....

We will change all the colonialist names and replace them with African leaders names, no matter the cost.

So you seem to think you are God's descendants? So trying to shift the blame for killing the Khoisans? Claiming the killing was done by the Black people? Go back to your history books?:p

Actually you need to do some more research before you claim it to be false :p

I have to agree with TIAL on that one.... honestly. Supporting a corrupt rapist is not the way to go....

Name changes are retarded. How far back do you want to trace this to decide who really lived somewhere first and name things accordingly? Things are named the way they are because of the way history happened, why not just name new things whatever the hell they want and add to the history instead of trying to change the past through wishful thinking.

+1

But you can't teach a monkey to speak, nor can you teach an old dog new tricks, nor can you hammer sense into some people's minds....
