More respect for Ubuntu 10.04

So today I decided to give printing on Ubuntu a shot.

Shuftied over to System - Administration - Printing, and clicked on 'Add'.

First printer I added was a HP color laserjet cp1515n - which Ubuntu correctly identified and installed the printers for, no fuss, no mess. Did a test page, and it printed 100%.

When I was back at the 'New Printer' window, I was impressed to see that it also picked up the other network printers - so I installed one extra printer (a Konica Minolta C205) which was also correctly identified and used.

There was absolutely no need for me to do a google and rummage around with terminal windows to get printing to work, or to compile some drivers, it just worked out of the box.

I'm getting more and more impressed by the day.

I just finished upgrading the wife's PC to 10.10 and everything was picked up and running in 15 minutes, printers, wifi, gfx card.
Pretty impressive, not mess, no fuss.

My printer is a Lexmark and doesn't work (I blame the idiots at Lexmark). HP on the other hand go out of their way to support Linux. When I have to buy again it will definitely be HP.

If it's a network printer all the better.

I'll have to check on the Samsung USB printer at home... will try over the weekend.

Samsung is supported, at least mine is.

Excellent printer driver support. Costs R300 with upgrades. Its cheaper than buying a new printer. I'm currently using the trial version (again) as my Cannon was broken under 9.10 (was using the wrong ink cartridge). I plan to buy it soon as its worth every cent (my printer can also print on CDs).

TurboPrint also shows me my ink levels.

Oh, and a lot of guys just install TurboPrint to get the drivers and then just use the drivers without the frontend (and then not having to pay R300)

Thanks cbrunsdonza, but Lexmark is not supported. Most of the printers listed have drivers available elswhere, but it is convenient to get the drivers from them (instead of searching). In Linux I use Virtualbox (with XP guest) for printing etc.

All my PC's print wireless to it (single use each time), so it's "like" a network printer. It's excellent (Lexmark X4550), but the Linux side make me hate it.
