Intel 320 SSD bug causes forum despair

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/11/intel_320_ssd_bug_reports/

'Intel doesn't include firmware failures in the MTBF!'

Users are reporting that Intel 320 SSDs are dying, and power cycle limitations appear to be at fault. The company had not issued a fix at time of writing.

There is an active forum about the faulty solid state drives at the Intel Support Community website.

"Poster Goose" wrote a message on 1 June, quoting from a PC Review forum:

Be wary of the new Intel SSD 320 series. Currently, there's a bug in the controller that can cause the device to revert to 8MB during a power failure. AFAIK they have not yet publicly announced it, and won't have a firmware fix ready for release until the end of July.

This was followed by poster "Giovanni" on 16 June, who said:

I just had this happen to me. Had the 600G model for a month. Then the drive crashed and now DISKPART shows 8MB for that drive. SMART attributes are gone... The drive worked great for a month!

A third poster, "Vit", said he had experienced the same problem on 23 June. Others followed. "Vit" got his drive working again, using the Intel SSD toolbox, but he had lost all the data on the drive.

As of today, no identified Intel support person has responded to the thread.

We are trying to reach Intel to get a comment but have had no response so far.

I also see that the OCZ Agility and Vertex SSD issue is ongoing, even though some firmware updates have been released the SandForce based SSDs are still giving problems:

There really do seem to be quite a few issues with SSD's lately.. I know they relatively new, but with the amount of issues occurring, it's quite worrisome..

Think I'll stick to Samsung. My 60 GB SSD is 3 years old and in use 12 hours a day. Not a single issue.

Yea my samsung 128gb and my g.skill 128gb run 24/7 with numerous power cuts thanx to eskom and i have never had an issue.

I would not buy an intel ssd anyhow. People should also have back ups of all their work on any hdd.

I got the 160GB X25M-G2, which is in my gaming machine and no hassles so far..

Eish, not good. I've had my Mushkin 120GB for 6 months now without an issue so far.
I had decided though to hold off on buying another drive for my Desktop at home until SSD can once again regain my confidence.
I must say I haven't really seen any massive issues listed online when searching for the Mushkin drives... I hope that's an indicator that it'll be OK in the near future. I'd really hate going back to HDD on my work notebook.
