So, I decide a month or so back to get into this Counter Strike thing, very much against my better judgement, as I've heard mention all the time that a bunch of immature kids hang out on it - yes, CS is very much a 'bad thing' to many gamers. Fact is, there's no game servers for any other decent FPS games else in this country, so if you want to play a good online FPS, you have pretty much one choice.
I was pleasantly suprised that the people on the game servers were mostly well behaved and mature, so I've kinda got into it - I still suck, but I'm getting better.
Which leads to the "fun" I had today updating CS:S with the bots and new map / updated maps.
I was already logged into Steam, so I tried to just launch CS:S expecting it to start updating automatically. It didn't, it sat there saying "preparing to play Counter Strike Source" for about 20 minutes.
Ok, I exited out of Steam and started it again - it didn't start. It was listed as a running process, but after 10 minutes, nada. Ok, end process, reboot window.
After logging in, I could now start Steam again and managed to login, click on Play Games took about 15 minutes to go through "looking for game updates.." upon which I was presented with the list. On closer inspection, I noticed that Half-Life 2 and CS:S were listed as not being installed. I could download CS:S at 950meg from the servers - odd, thanks, but no thanks.
Ok, so I exit steam, start it again and it takes 15 minutes to get to the Play Games menu - now my games are back again. So, I start CS:S so it will update and it starts doing that - saying it'll take 496 minutes !
I also notice that the steam application is taking up 99% of the CPU process.
I leave it running and it takes an hour to update, after which I was informed that "Steam cannot login at this time", so I close it down.
On starting it again, it asks for my password and takes about 30 minutes to load.
On finally getting to the game menu and launching CS:S, it updates itself again, taking another 20 minutes !
In total, it's taken me close on 3 hours to update CS:S - nice one.
I also have absolutely no idea how large the update was in terms of file size.
To top it all of, my CS:S now runs like *** with rotten frame rates - maybe a reboot will sort it out, not too sure !
