More UWC students arrested

Shame... boo hoo... prisoners of war. What a ****ing joke. You're a waste of space and resources. Take your attitudes and selfies an piss off. You should all pack your bags and leave, make space for those who deserve and want to study to better their and their families lives.

Wednesday would never have happened if management and students had worked towards speaking “as one voice”.

You can't work 'as one voice' when one side only DEMANDS and refuses to listen/negotiate.

want to avoid exams so badly they are willing to do anything?

Yes, thats exactly what you're doing. You are that stupid.

You poor traumatised criminals. What about those you traumatised when beating them?

“It’s the type of fear whereby when you drop the soap in the shower, just that bang makes you want to run away. That is trauma.”

I didn't think that analogy was going to end the way it did... :)

UWC exams to continue on Monday

Genevieve Quintal, News24

Cape Town - Exams at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) will continue on Monday, the institution said on Thursday.

Exams, which were cancelled this week because of the violent protests on campus, would be repeated the week of December 1, UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said in a statement.

UWC was doing everything to secure conditions on campus next week but students who preferred to complete exams in January were able to do so.

"We have also had extensive consultation with the police today [Thursday] to ensure that their presence on campus is not only in response to incidents after they have happened, but that they would also play an active role in the prevention of incidents during the exam period.

"Police were on campus the whole day with increased public order security."

He said the university understood that this was a difficult and frustrating time for both students and staff.

Fifteen students arrested on Wednesday after clashes with police at the university appeared in the Bellville Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The state did not oppose bail, set at R3 000 each for all the accused.

They were expected back in court on December 11.

The students have been prohibited from entering the campus with the court ordering they could only collect personal effects under escort. They must also reside at their alternative addresses.

Chaos erupted at the institution on Wednesday when protesters started fires across the campus, broke windows and set furniture alight before a stand-off with police.

Tyhalibongo said it was quiet on campus on Thursday but the situation remained tense.

In the early hours of morning there was an arson attempt at the Residence Life building.

UWC pleaded for understanding as it tried to resolve the situation.

"Our ultimate goal is to try and secure a conclusion to the 2015 academic year.

Failure to do so would impact on current and prospective students, and may erode the good standing of our university," he said.

Human shield claim is ‘ridiculous’

Cape Town - Acting provincial police commissioner General Tembisile Patekile has described the notion that police used a protesting UWC student as a human shield, as “ridiculous”.

Responding to media reports after the violent fees protests at the university on Wednesday,

Patekile said on Thursday that police acted within the framework of the law. “Police were acting within the law because you can’t have a situation where they are still arresting people and must put them into police vehicles one by one.”

An exclusive picture depicting a handcuffed former SRC leader Misingathi Kula surrounded by police – described by fellow students as being used as a human shield – was published on the front page of Thursday’s Cape Argus.

‘UWC SRC is in cahoots with university management’

CAPE TOWN - Protesting University of the Western Cape (UWC) students have accused the Student Representative Council (SRC) of being in cahoots with university management.

The students claim management has made an about turn on some of their demands.

They say this decision has led to the protests, vandalism and clashes with police this week.

Some UWC students have accused the SRC of not being on their side.

“We don’t trust the SRC and we don’t believe they are representing the students’ voice in that position. We believe that they are in bed with management.”

Feel sorry for the students who want to write their exams and pass. These strikers must not have DP :D

UWC cancels scheduled exams amid protests

All final year students will however write an assessment exam at an undisclosed venue situated off campus with a heavy security presence.

Other students who are not in their final year have the option to have their continuous assessment marks used as their end-year result.
If they’re not confident their CAM marks will be enough for them to pass, the undergraduates can opt to go through an assessment process in January.

UWC cancels exams due to threats

Jeanette Chabalala, News24

Cape Town – The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has cancelled exams that were scheduled to start on Monday amid threats by protesting students.

The university on Friday issued a statement on its website that it is deeply concerned about the continuation of the examinations in the current format.

“The latest developments at CPUT which threatened to spill over to UWC, together with many claims made by the protesting students, in meetings and on various social media platforms that allow examinations to take place, have necessitated the university management to deliberate over their decision to continue with examinations on Monday, 16 November 2016.

“The university has in an attempt to ensure the safety of our students, management, together with deans, deputy deans, other senior academics from the faculties, and endorsed by Senate Executive Committee, have considered alternative ways to allow students to complete this academic year. We acknowledge that this is not ideal, however, given the abnormality of the situation we have no option but to offer students an opportunity that will avoid any personal harm,” said the registrar’s office.

The graduation ceremonies scheduled for December 11 have also been cancelled.

The university has however decided that all final year students across all faculties will participate in some form of assessment, which will take place off-campus.

Meanwhile the African National Congress Women's League in the Western Cape’s provincial co-ordinator Vuyiwe Hani said they supported and encouraged peaceful exams.

“Education is a fundamental human right deserved by all children in this country. The ANC Women's League Western Cape is encouraged by President Zuma's decision not to increase fees next year. We hope that this decision is an indication towards realizing free education,” said Hani.

Hani also added: “As parents, we know exactly the toll the weight of university fees can take on families, but we would be amiss not to acknowledge the huge strides in easing that weight that the ANC government has taken over the period, through such interventions as NSFAS and University subsidies and we know that the journey to complete free education is one the ANC is singularly committed to.”

Exactly what they were after.

Is this only happening in the Western Cape?
If yes, are these "students" actually students? Sound like someone wants to make the WC ungovernable. Don't need to point out who.

Arrest them and continue with your lives.

Exactly what they were after.

The final year students will be writing from Monday. I'm not sure yet if it's just for final year students or if the exams are for all final year modules that need to be written.

Other students will be getting the year mark apparently. Bit of a fsuckup. Wish I knew the real story. Everybody else has moved on but there seems to be something else happening at uwc.

Two UWC residences damaged in arson incidents

Lauren Hess, News24

Cape Town – Three more students were arrested at the University of the Western Cape’s Bellville campus on Monday after two residences were set alight.

UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo confirmed that the Kovacs and Res 1 residences were damaged in incidents of arson.

Protests were also ongoing at the Chris Hani residence.

Earlier on Monday, protesters prevented traffic from entering the campus.

Campus was closed and activities had been suspended. Only final year students were writing exams at an off-campus location.

The university issued a statement on its website on Friday saying it is deeply concerned about the continuation of the examinations in the current format.

“The latest developments at CPUT [Cape Peninsula University of Technology] which threatened to spill over to UWC, together with many claims made by the protesting students, in meetings and on various social media platforms that allow examinations to take place, have necessitated the university management to deliberate over their decision to continue with examinations on Monday, 16 November 2016.

“The university has in an attempt to ensure the safety of our students, management, together with deans, deputy deans, other senior academics from the faculties, and endorsed by Senate Executive Committee... considered alternative ways to allow students to complete this academic year.

“We acknowledge that this is not ideal, however, given the abnormality of the situation we have no option but to offer students an opportunity that will avoid any personal harm,” said the registrar’s office.
