So, it seems that Mweb has fixed whatever problem that they had with interference in Jo'burg. Yesterday they came to my place to signal test (again) and install. Seems that the signal was ok, 'cos I have a white Alvarian box connected to my PC and a long black cable disappearing into my ceiling. I don't know where it goes (it was dark when I got home yesterday, dark when I left for work this morning and dark when I got home today... I'm beginning to think I work too hard

) I'll check tomorrow, if the SU hasn't written up too long a list of chores.
So, what are the results?
1. Speed is nothing to shout about... it seems limited to 384K... same as my ADSL line.
2. International latency is (slightly) better than my Shaped SAIX account, but local is worse.
On MWeb Wimax:
Google - 276ms
Mybroadband - 86ms average (but maximum 114ms)
On SAIX shaped ADSL
Google - 356ms
Mybroadband -47ms average (maximum 71)
3. Packet loss is not great. I ran a ping over a few hours and got 17% packet loss. On ADSL I get 1% or less. 17% packet loss reminds me of my Sentech days../shudder
4. Local Speed test results:
iBurst test- WiMax: Down 331kbps, Up 316kbps, Jitter 7.2ms, packet loss 6.4%, QoS 70%
iBurst test- ADSL384shaped(SAIX): Down 327kbps, Up 107 kbps, Jitter 2.2ms, packet loss 0%, QoS 84%
6. International speed test results
Speedtest.net (New York) - Wimax: Down 324kbps, Up 184 kbps, ping 343ms
Speedtest.net (New York) - ADSL384shaped(SAIX): Down 321kbps, Up 103 kbps, ping 455ms
7. Torrents seem to be full speed, I've had torrents averaging 39kbps, but looking at my netlimiter graphs, it is not a flatline graph like it is with ADSL. There are peaks and troughs - maybe because of packet loss. I don't think the trial is shaped, thus the better international latency (but worse local).
8. I'm not a gamer, but if anyone wants a latency test to a server, please post the URL and I'll ping it.
9. Skype is ok, about the same as my normal ADSL line.
10. Browsing is slower than ADSL, sometimes pages need to be reloaded to render correctly. I'm sure that this relates to the high packet loss.
11. Multi- threaded downloads run ok, but don't seem to be as consistent as ADSL. If you look at these screenshots, you can see that the WiMax download is not as consistent - and is slightly slower. Again, I think this is due to packet loss.
ADSL Multi Tread vs
WiMax Multi Thread
If anyone wants more info, please feel free to post or PM me... but be patient.
edit :So it seems I spoke too soon....
This morning (Sunday 2nd Sept), latency is up to ****, browsing speed is glacial, torrents running at 2.5KB/s (last night running at 35KB/s).
Local ping to mweb.co.za is 1700ms vs ADSL at 44ms

WiMax Packet loss: 40%

International ping to Google is 1850ms vs ADSL 490ms.

deja vu all over again...
