Hi,

Got some more info for you from the wimax trialist :)
~p

Hi there

The internet has been really slow this week but only whenever it rains, there are think clouds between my house and the Tower, I don't know much about Wimax/RF in terms of this being a factor.

On Monday I installed a DSL wifi router (Not ADSL router) , and it works fine and can connect other pc's to it, just hope I can keep the wimax once the trial is done as the router was R450, and I cant use it for ADSL.

(I know what some people are thinking, and its not the router slowing the speed down as I tried the speed tests without it.)

From www.speedtest.com

from my PC to Cape Town

26/072007 20:30

heavy rain

D/L 172

U/P 149

late 317ms

27/072007 12:00

rainy at times, then clear

D/L 217

U/P 161

late 95ms

my comments

"Sapphiron

384k???, what a joke

Come on Telkom/Mweb, what happend to the "excess of 10mbit" you were aiming for."

-They are trying different speeds with different people

"56kMan

yeah

maybe it's his LAN lol"

I was thinking the same thing about the 100mbs, however the techy guy told me what I first posted, "On most days I connect at 100Mbps to the wimax tower some 13km away, from there my Internet speed is limited to 386kbps"

Once Wimax is running full force then competition will set the rules and the consumer will win, unless……..

I am just worried about the rain affecting the speed right now.

YUM! I NEED MORE INFO! FEED ME!

I have the same problem with my Wireless connetion, when it rains but its 64k so it could be slow from the start...
Oh well seeing that the tower is far away that could also be a problem? IMO a good WiMAX system has more than one tower anyway! since it is a trail there is only one! :) otherwise sounds good holding thumbs for P.E!

Can we get some tests from our local speed test sites, the international one apparently doesn't give quite as good results as the Telkom, iBurst, gamco etc speed tests. I know it's going to a local node, but anyway..

If we could get a few of those for comparisons it would be great. :)

Also, for latency could he just run a few pings to some sites. Saix.net, myadsl.co.za, google.com and google.co.uk would be some good reference points.

Question on wimax

I was wondering something...

On the telkom do broadband website for wimax wireless it states X gig using telkominternet.

Surely this must be part of the telkom-ip-network backbone ...

I was wondering if one would be able in the future to again buy your data pool from someone else (IS/VERIZON)..

Games, Music, Downlaoding, Youtube ANYTHING!

With Telkom Wimax it seems like you can use any ADSL account.

I play battlefield 2142 and works OK - i mailed them a while ago to ask about ports being blocked etc..and they replied saying more bandwidth have been allocated. But still early in the evenings its really slow and can bearly play - after 9 its OK and get pings of 150-250 - anytime before that i get around 500 and up. When it rains its also not too great, but doing normal downloading is fine and get around 40-50kb/s.

Pinging google I get this

Saix speed test gives me this:
Your current bandwidth reading is:
352.40kbps
which means you can download at 44.05 KB/sec. from our servers

Any other requests - shoot !!!

Ok, reading this makes me just jealous, I have only access to ISDN where I live 54km from Pietermarizburg. I phone Telkom and asked about getting Wimax since my exchange will never be upgraded to ADSL. I was told it is in testing phase and I cant get in.

Is this true? How can I get access to Wimax to see if it works where I live?

As far as I understand they are offering wimax to homes that cannot get ADSL, however I don’t know about your area, try and speak to someone at telkom that knows what they are talking about, (if that is possible).

Telkom told me about this wimax package because I cant get adsl, but it is expensive, the guy said R499 for a 512 package including one gig usage:mad:
